View Full Version : Unlocked my 1900+ XP?? My secret -- use a very-fine artist's brush, screw the tape!

Well guys I unlocked my XP last night. Uses my g/f's purple nail polish to fill in the slits, then used rear-window defogger repair paint to connect the bridges.

I tried numerous times using the brushes that came with the nail polish and the rear window kit -- using invisible tape to tape off a stencil. But I just could not control where the defogger paint went (it seemed to seep under the tape), or it would come off with the tape when I taped over connection to paint its neighbor.

Then I had an idea. I went with my g/f to the art store (she likes to paint) and bought the finest point paint brush they had (0/0 was the tip size -- and it came to a point).

Then I taped off the connections and painted over the slits with her quick-dry nail polish. After that I ditched the tape all together.

Then I just free-handed the connections using the super-fine paint brush and a delicate touch. I didn't tape anything else off.

When I was done -- I let the defogger paint dry. Then I used an exacto knife to scape away any excess paint (places where the connections look too close together). Ended up with five perfectly connected bridges.

Bottom line -- it's very helpful to purchase a very fine paint brush and an exacto knife when getting ready for the unlocking procedure. The brush cost me about $3.

BTW: I get access to all mulipliers except that when I use 12.5 (XP 2000+), I get 13. This seem to be an 8K7A Mobo issue becase the same thing happened when I tried using my old factory unlocked T-bird at 12.5.

I'll post pics next time I yank the processor out.

Good call! I used a modeler's brush when I tried to unlock mine....messed up somewheres though....

1st time only got limited number of multis, all of them under the default 11.5x

2nd time effectively "re-locked" the XP at 11x YIKES!

I did find that rubbing alcohol removes the defogger paint quite well. I had it handy w/ the Q-Tips, as that's how I clean the old Arctic Silver off of the CPU die.

I just got a new HSF to test out...(Millennium Glaciator II)... Soooo...off comes the HSF again anyways. Heck, they say the third times the charm, right? :p

Hey SpeedDJ --

If you click the link you will see that it just goes to a place on Anandtech where I can enter in my rig specs and my CPU O/C specs. It certainly is not an advertisement or a referral. Just an easy and clean way for others to access to the specs on my rig.

Unless you are saying that linking to any non Overclockers site is an advertisement -- in which case you are construing your Forum rules in an absurd manner.

Basicly you can't have any links in your sig at all unless your a senior

and oh yeah, before 500 people decide to post in this thread about what the rules are- Please don't! I'm just clarifying this one particular rule

Skrill,

The forum rule is generally interpreted to prohibit any URLs other than those for overclockers.com SETI and Folding teams. This may seem a bit over the top, but it is consistently applied.

As a case in point, I followed your link and indeed there is advertising on the page. Specifically there were ads for a particular brand of motherboard and for a Visa card. While I am confident you did not place those ads there nor do you receive remuneration from them, still your URL links to commercial advertisements. This is explicitly prohibited on the most straightforward reading of the forum guidelines.

I'm not a moderator and so won't reiterate the request that you remove the link. But I did want to let you know that you're not being singled out. As near as I can tell this rule is applied with a very even hand. And I can assure I'd be the first to squeal if it weren't. Also I wanted to point out that your link does contain commercial advertisements and hence is expressly prohibited even on a non-absurd reading.

I will just reiterate to Skrill, if he wishes to place a link to those pics, all he has to do is put the link in his profile under "WWW", where it can be accessed using the "www" button below all his posts.

You can link, just link in the right place.:)
