get the ASRock 775Dual-VSTA ....that's what i'm planning to get until there are better motherboards and also when i get more money to get the other components...this board will support ddr400, agp cards, and conroe chips...the mb is also cheap hovering around 50 bucks

theres a new asrock 865pe also
http://www.asrock.com/product/ConRoe865PE.htm don't think its populated shops yet but if not its on the way
Asrock don't OC very well at all though most if not all as boards don't have a vcore setting. Having said that there is no real reason apart from benchmark score to overclock a conroe at the moment (for the casual everyday user) - my friend has the e6600 on the assus board mentioned in the above post and gets a super pi time of 20 seconds - runs all his games at max res and setting without jerky play or even a hint of jerky play.

http://roguesgallery.mine.nu/files/1-5-44.jpg (slight oc on there but thats as far as he can go on that board)

also the asus p5p800se but that doesn't support conroe - does support 8xx 9xx dual core cpus though

Awesome I might hold of then for that ConRoe865PE I’ve been trying to research the heck out of that P5P800SE there just not that much info to be had on it and the info I did find complains of voltage drop under load, combine that with a D805, from which I’ve read is a power hog, doesn’t sound good although I’ve read a few people got 3.4Ghz OC on P5P800SE with D805 I don’t like bad power circuitry on my mobo's Beatbox showed me that ConRoe865PE the other day, right now I don’t know what too do LOL, I don’t want to spend money & regret it, I’m just wondering how much better will a P5P800SE/ASROC with an 805D be vs my current rig....

Maybe I should just start saving up $ and wait.........

im at a stable 3.8 with the p5p800se 805 combo cant go any higher stable though but im happy with that - but still that conroe865 will be same price as p5p800se and the e6300 will only be an extra 40-50 dollars maybe over the 805-with the conroe865/e6300 youll blow the 805 back to planet x - so imho id say save the extra little bit and have a kick ass system

the asrock is only going to be like $56.. so you can spend some money twoard a C2D and not worry about how well you can clock it untill you can upgrade the rest of your components ;)

Conroe with AGP is not a right spec for US market so this model won't be available in US and this model only for Asia market so if you are interest you could try Asia web site. Thanks ! !

It just make easy to change components, but not good for overclocking.
Im on P D 930, DDR 512 X2, AGP 6800 XT.

My wife is originally from Asia, & from time to time, we've (painfully) had items shipped to & fro.

If that board really costs approx 56 USD, the shipping costs to the states may approach the price of the board!

Seriously.

Unless the vendor has discount shipping rates due to high volume, such as ZZF & Egg have, and is willing & able to ship international at the volume rates.

But then again, if you really want that specific board....

Nice find deanrc, & welcome to the forums!

I could use a "transitional" board like that, as you can see by my sig rig. I hate Via & SIS (lousy experiences), but do like i865PE. I'm not ready to buy PCIe16 untill DX-10 comes out.

Now, what I'd really like I'd really to see, would be for Asus to add the new microcode to the P5P800 series BIOS, & change the VRM to work with Conroe/Allendale. Think that's about all it would take. Maybe also a faster PLL for higher overclockability overhead of the faster 266MHz FSB chips.

With C2D's "relatively" modest power consumption (by recent Intel CPU standards), even the marginal 3 phase P5P800 pwr circuitry would probably suffice.

I'd much prefer Asus, given a choice, even tho Asrock & Asus are both held by the same holding company.

Oh well...

Thx again, for crunching the numbers.

I have an ABIT AS8 865PE board that o/c's great. I have a 506@4.3ghz on it, but alas it doesnt even support 8xx or 9xx series. Ive tried to find a bios hack, but have had no luck.

FWIW -

The DFI 875-PT hybrid mobo would have been great for this app, too, but alas, no BIOS support, either.

Seems the Asrock's are the only game in town, ATM, anyway.

Hi guys,

I want to upgrade and oc the core 2 duo the cheap side and reuse my DDR I dimms.

Indeed conroe865pe seems only valid choice (if you want 4 x Dimm DDR I)
The asrock VSTA board has apg/pci-e DDRI / DDRII but only 2 dimms per kind of DDR. I want to have 4 dimms for 4 x 512 twinmoss or corsair.

and of course getting 6300 to 3.2 ghz or above.

First item: what mb are available
chipset 865 chipset 915 with proper voltage regulator according to:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=710828
pending voltage regulator onboard and bios.

so I have been asking mb companies.
=>
Supermicro:
"I am sorry and afraid not with AGP or DDR 1 memory support. We

=>
ECS:
"Thanks for contacting ECS.
865PE-A7 doesn't support E6300 CPU due to hardware limit."
getting them to answer the full question: 'what boards do you have' is sometimes difficult.
=>
MSI: translated from dutch
"all core 2 duo mb boards have DDR II"
=>
Gigabyte:
They just answer by sending url to there core2 duo boards
I do not find DDRI capable boards there.
=>
help me out on the other ones guys.

Item two
getting the conroe865pe to overclock well.
-> volt mods on conroe?
-> clockgen // cpucool fsb
conroe865pe has pll winbond :
conroe865pe should have, according to systools site, http://www.techpowerup.com/wiki/doku.php/systool/how_to_locate_the_clock_generator_on_motherboard#w 83194bg-sd_unsupported
as clock_generator:
W83194BG-SD
winbond website:
The winbond website:

SSOP 48
http://www.winbond-usa.com/products/winbond_products/pdfs/PCclock/W83194BR-SD_W83194BG-SDc.pdf

I mailed clockgen guy and he replied (thx to Franck from cpuz) he has beta that supports similar winbond pll
W83195BG: he thinks it is close to the used pll.

That is about summary of findings.
online experience on the board itself not found :bang head

Let's join forces and gather our info!

Ive had no experience with 915 based boards, but from what Ive read, stay away from them. They do not o/c that well. I do know from personal experience that the 865PE, though old, is a great chipset and o/c's well.

Hello there,

You seem to be really sure that it will give bad performance. But how to explain the anandtech results? this is the reason I am investigating the conroe DDR I combo so I can cut expenses.

Anandtech says: (the 775i65G has 865G chipset)
"The biggest surprise was the overall performance of the ASRock 775i65G board as it was just as competitive with the other chipsets in our testing and proved to be extremely stable with every benchmark or application we threw at it. Who knew that AGP 8x and DDR would still be this competitive after a myriad of chipset, memory, CPU, and GPU enhancements over the last three years? [Ed:sarcastic reflection] While both technologies have come to their end we find it comforting to know that if you own either then you can still upgrade to the fastest processor series currently available and not worry about general system performance. That is unless you want to play the latest games at 1600x1200; in that case we will grudgingly have to advise you to go buy that PCI Express 7950 GX2 or X1900 XT along with the required components to support it. Until you reach the point where you're ready to make such an expenditure, these value based motherboards from ASRock are a wise purchase to extend the life of your current investment.

for the 915/925 chipset, they were bad design. they run all the P4/Celeron cpus, and have decent O/C. However, due to its bad design. It doesn't even support any dual core. thats included PD 8xx, 9xx and C2D. They leaded them make a change to 945/955 chipset.

If anyone is interested I ordered the ConRoe865PE from OZdirect in Australia. The order went smooth. The MB was ordered on 9/6 and I received it on 9/14/06. I installed a Core 2 E6600 CPU with Corsair DDR400 memory. The MD was set up for a FSB of 1066/266 MHZ and the install went with out any problems. The Bios does let you set the FSB up to 300 MHZ, the default was 266 with this processor. It did boot into WIN XP when set to 300MHZ but I did not do any burn in tests at this setting. I left it set at 266 MHZ as this is about a 30% OC for this chipset anyway. It does super pi 1M in 21 sec. For me it was a good upgrade because it let me keep all of my old IDE drives and AGP card. It is about 4 times faster than my old system in which the MB only had an AGP X4 slot and USB 1 ports. If anyone has any questions I will try to answer them.

Post a CPUz shot of the main page and the memory page. I'm dying to see what speed it's running your memory at :)

On my 775Dual-VSTA (which I sold, Gautum's DIED) my ram was running 714mhz!

I have been running this bd with the FSB jumper set at 1066 MHZ and DDR 400 memory. I have the Bios set for Auto. At this setting the E6600 CPU shows it is running at 2.4 GHZ. There is a setting in the Bios which allows you to set the FSB from 266 to 300 MHZ. At this setting the CPU shows that it is running 2.7 GHZ. I have not run for any time at this setting. I just wanted to see if it would run there. So far I feel this bd has been a cost effective up grade.
I tried to attach some screen shots from Sandra but this system would not allow it do to size. If I reduce the size of the images they were not clear. Could someone give me some instructions on how to attach some images that meet this systems size requirements and still be readable. Thanks
