Hi i was washing the dishes today and i though about making my self a little ISP for like 10 ppl. Can someone plesae give me a link to a good guide on making a little ISP? or can someone explain it too me? Do i need more than one phone line?

say i had dsl, i make a computer and put 5 modems and 1 NIC to it. I plug the dsl modem into the NIC and then i would have 5 ppl dial in, would that work?

I don't know if your ISP would like this very much.

Yes you need 5 phone lines, unless you don't plan on having everyone logged in at the same time. I think this will be more trouble and cost more than it's worth.

Maybe if they were your neighbors and you had a wireless connection to them, but the cost of implementing 5 lines plus a router, or even just a linux box with 5 modems isn't really worth it.

It probably violates your user agreement as well

The big thing is you need to lease an internet port. That's money. And it's not money that your going to get from a few buddies on dial up. Yes you could bounce them through your connection to your ISP, but your ISP is going to notice this and put an abrupt stop to it. That is ten accounts that he isn't getting paid for. And if you did do this for 10 people on dial up, their performance is going to be so poor that it defeats the purpose.

You could have them dial into your machine via VPN and use your connection to tunnel through the internet. This may be viable if you feel like running mulitple modems, but like the others said, this will probably be against your contract. I would be willing to be that your ISP doesn't have anything in your contract because they usually dont forsee the normal home user having the knowledge to setup a VPN. But if they get wind of it, which they will, I'm positive that they will put a halt to it.

ISP's are getting anal. Broadband hasn't been taking off like everyone thought it would. You see these broadband companies dropping like flies when the economy was good, let alone now. Ecite@Home is going bankrupt, and they brought the world cable internet. That's not a good sign. When I call Sprint with a problem with my DSL, even when I know its on their end, like a DNS server in my area is down, they refuse to check because I have a router.

The local cable company is the same way. They have limited their uploads to 64k because they dont want people running web servers and game servers. I'm sorry, but that was the whole point of broadband to begin with. Contrary to popular belief, it wasnt invented so your porn sites come up faster....They also refuse to do anything if you have a router in their system. I have talked to the guys that run the local cable internet. You get a static IP addy. I asked them if it's ok for me to run a router to protect my computer, my data, and my privacy while on a static IP. And they basically said that they wont support any connection problems while the router is in place. Same goes for firewalls be it software or hardware.

Luckily these idoits are on their way to being replaced when @Home is totally gone. Then the local cable company is taking it over. And luckily my buddy will be handling the routers. And luckily he's putting all his buddies on their own segment that is uncapped. And luckily I'm one of them. God it's good to know people in the right places.

man, when i read this post title i almost broke down crying? Just the thought of Having my own ISP! Isin't there a way u could not use ur isp so they wouldn't get mad? If so, I would love to experiment, even if only connecting at the most 5 people!

Hey Man! At Southwest WI Tech College last semester in our linux class we built our own ISP. I would have to dig a bit to find the documentation on it, and it wouldn't be the best, being written by students. And it wouldn't address such concerns as ISP rules and such.

But it is supprisingly easy. We built it using 3 computers, One as the dial-in server, one as the e-mail,news,web,ftp server, and one as the firewall-router.

I'm sure with NAT (Network Address Translation, a way of translating and connecting to the internet) you should be able to get by without your ISP knowing about it. It may be something where you setup most of the hardware using your one phone line as a test line, then after you get it all setup you could start adding modems and phone lines. I'm not sure how cost effective it would be but it would defenetly be fun.

If you would like me to send you the HOWTO doc we have for setting it up on Redhat Linux please e-mail me. also feel free to e-mail me with questions. I'll do my best to answer them.

Any further questions feel free to e-mail me.

PS. I know the dial-in server and router worked perfectly, I'm not sure about the web/ftp server..... :o

Also, i was just searching the forums on how to connect 2 modems and i found a post where it said that an isp could connect people at higher that 56k as long as some government branch didn't find out, so if i had an ISP with only 3 computers could their connection be like 97k?

They would still be useing a 56k modem so that would limit them to 56 k ..the government does not allow a true 56 k connection..

I had an idea that was sorta kinda like this. Basicly, I get a T1 line (300 bucks), then share it with 10 fiends. basicly, I pay 30 bucks a month instead of 40 fer cable, and get it faster since my neibors arent hard core gamers like me.

ok... I e-mailed it to you guys, but I'm going to try again at attaching a zip file....

if this doesn't work, don't blame me. Blame the forums!

WOW:eek: Great Article! I really like the effort put into it. I think I will try this out maybe when christmas comes and i can get some NIC'S and maybe 1 more computer. I8n the meantime I was thinking of setting up an anonymous mail server. Is it possible? I would probably have to use Linux or something write? But can I get it to run for clients in Windows?
