View Full Version : Lan Parties and Watercooling, do they mix?

Ok, well since Ive installed my watercooling, i havent gone to a lan party. But I was invited to one for later today (its 1:30 AM here) and I was wondering what I should watch out for when I transport it. What are the chances of it starting to leak? Is there too much risk? Should I not go? Im always really careful when I carry it but Im still worried that I might mess up all the hard work that Ive put into this beautiful machine. Any suggestions are welcome.

So long as the T Line/res is capped, you'll be fine. Just watch out for all the oohs and aaahs when people see your rig. They've been known to distract gamers ;). :D.

never had a problem with mine being transported

then again... it is in a cube with wheels on it :sn:

No problems transporting here either. I've had t-lines with caps on them, t-lines with DD Fillports on them, and reservoirs...even laying on their sides they didn't leak.

I've gone to tons of lan parties with watercooling, my only concern was my rad was mounted on the back of my case so I didn't want that getting banged around, but as long as your tubes are well fitting on the blocks and such you shouldn't have any problems leak wise.

Go to monthly LANS with my WCing and it's fine. The tube arn't going to come off the barbs... only possible place for a leak would be a res or t line. Make sure they are sealed and have fun. The ooos and ahhhs are great... I actually kept the box my case came in and just stick my system back in it with the foam so it is protected. I have a top mounted rad so if yours is external watch that you don't beat it around. Other than that it will be fine.

My Rig was Just at its first LAN party since being watercooled just a couple weeks ago. Aside from all the people drooling over it I had no problems.

Same here. You'd think they never saw a WC'd system. lol

I set my tower in the front passenger seat and put the seatbelt on it. Nice soft secure ride.

It's weird because most of us who do real mods to cases and watercooling do go to LAN parties...but at my LANs most of them think lighted fans are cool

My res cracked during a 6 hour drive to a LAN down south...a few drips of water escaped but nothing lethal =X

Watercooling at a Lan Party is do able. I've done it. I hope you like attention if you do. People come around and ask you questions about it no matter what you are currently doing.

Yea, what ****es me off is if they have a mod contest and the guy with the super flashy WC kit wins meanwhile your hard work cutting and modding the crap outta your case gets shuned:mad:

I travel all the time with my watercooled Wavemaster case. I elimanated res. and went with Tline and DD filport. The res was the only conern I had with taking the computer with me all the time.

yeah - you can do H2O in a LAN box with no issues. For years, my main LAN box was a combo rig -- phase change on the CPU and H2O with pelts on the GPU and n.bridge. I never had any problems with that setup when it was ran with either a res or a t-line. Granted, it was a heavy SOB to lug around but it was worth the effort to see weapon at the top of the most kills list on almost every map.

For the most trouble-free setup, go with a t-line and a DD fillport...and bolt your pump down for the trip.

Thats a sexy computer base =P

I knwo the feeling but i don't water cool my case, i simply have an acrylic case, and when i went to my last LAN, i had a bunch of flashy lights.

None of it was hard to set up by any means, but a guy even came over and asked to take pictures of it. It was cool, ebcause i dind't really mind the attention =D.

But i can imagine if you are in a tourny of sorts it would be a major PITA

EDIT

also have to mention that i will be watercooling my rig sometime in the winter when i can afford it. =D.

Catkicker, Funky looking system, does it also act as a nightlight?
The warm loving glow ofthose light's seems very compelling.

I am at a lan right now,(150ml fites.net). Anyhoo, im sitting next to another watercooled case.

I did see one watercooling falure, a thermaltake kit gave up the ghost (the pump had a major falure) and blew coolant all over some kids computer, but it was un related to transporting the thing.

thats what he gets for buying thermalrip! I feel sorry for all the suckers that didn't do any home work and bught the bs they put out about their crappy products.

Any case glad to hear ya made it to the LAN and are having fun!

I hauled my sys to a lan a while back, and its basicly 2 midtower ATX cases fastened together side byside. Weighs a TON with all my crap in it plus the full gallon res. It did fine but for good measure I wrapped a towel around my res in case something came loose. It didnt leak at all the whole way......... :D

I've taken my rig to dozens of LAN parties since I put in the WC kit, and I was more worried before I installed it about taking it places. I would rather take it places with the WC installed then with heavy heatsinks on everything.

Now my biggest worry is scratching my paint :p

Just took mine to its first lan party... weighs about 70 or 80 pounds but other than that i had no problems.

just got back from a week and a half long LAN, 2 watercooled computers there (both via me) and niether had a problem, though mine did heat the garage fairly well....the room temp was about 35C most of the LAN until a few cold hours where we all checked how well our vid cards can oc.

Thanks Penguin. I'm already thinking of Revision 5 when I sell this rig. I'm going to use the Swiftech Apogee block designed for servers, that way I'll have space to mount a 38mm 120mm fan both in push-pull configuration.

That sux.. Thats why don't use acrylic topped blocks.

yeah exactly you see so many cracked water block threads in here it isn't funny and everytime its an acrylic.

Stick to solid metal ones like the storm and apogee from swiftech.

Im new to WC'n also but i plan on taking mine to lans once the season starts up again.

I also have never had a problem when I use this method. Just make sure to keep it upright, well cushioned, and check it before you boot it up at the LAN (which you should be doing after a long computer moving trip anyways).

I'd be more concerned for those people with near kilo weighted air heatsinks.

yeah i make sure to lay my case face up so my ultra-120 doesnt fall off or something.

massive sinks, if they pop loose, have a lovely way of doing a nicely arched swing from their power cord right before they smash into to the top of yer vid card.

thinking back a bit to before my phase change/H2O and pelt box, I used a monster H2O system with a RLQO pump pushing around 1000gph through the loop. That one never leaked despite some distant LAN travels. I think that was mainly due to metal hose clamps on everything and a good mounting system for the pump. It's a good thing it never popped a hose loose-- that sucker shot water out of 1/2" tubing like a fricken garden hose. heh...I need to hook that back up to something.

If this behemoth of mine can go to LANs, anything can. (Prometeia AND watercooled, figure 80ish lbs)

http://mysite.verizon.net/gautamb/sys.JPG

Put it in the trunk of a station wagon, filled with boxes in order to keep it propped up and prevent it from falling.

This was the beast that I took to my school's lanparties. I havent had any troubles whatsoever, except when the people say that my rig looks like it *needs* another graphics card, another gig of Ram, and a terabyte of storage XD. Right now it's even cooler because I wc'ed my X800 GTO and added that to the loop.

I've also brought mine to a few parties. Just gotta be really gentle! Mines a lil heavy tho so I always try to park close to the door. ;)
