View Full Version : Which Celeron for BH6?

Currently Using:
BH6 Rev. 1.02 with SS bios
Stock HS & Fan
Super Slotket-III (Generic)
256 Mb PC133
Celeron 433 running great @ 83 fsb = 541Mhz
(Will not post @ 100 fsb)
I would like to do a low-budget processor upgrade.
Choices:
Celeron 700 $49.
Celeron 800 $50.
Celeron 850 $54.
Celeron 900 $61.
Celeron 1000 $68.
Questions:
1. What solution represents the best overclock potential
for my existing hardware and the best bang-for-buck?
2. Will the $26 price tag for Asus slotket result in enough
performance boost to justify the expense?
Think CHEAP and TIA for any suggestions.

best oc potential=Celly 900....also the slocket with the Celly will definately boost your scores, up high....

Welcome to OCers WillyLumpLump :D
I've seen a lot of people having good success with the Cel 800 but at the current prices I guess it really doesn't matter. Most Cellies tend to be good overclockers.
Yes, it's deffinately worth the cost of getting a good slotket, I personally prefer the MSI 6905 Master ver 2 or newer.
This I can't stress enough. Get a good HS/fan. Many times the stock HS's are fine at default or mild oc's, but I kinda get the impression you'd like to push it a little bit ;)
By the way, this probably should have been posted in Intel mobo's or Intel procs :)

oh yeah, if you get the 800, make sure youi get a cDo stepping, with the900 youre pretty much guaranteed this...
The Celeron 900 and higher are only made in the cD0 stepping flavor which usually give the highest overclocks. Generally I would recommend the 900 as the best bargain, but in this situation with that old BH6, I'd go with a 1 gig Celeron instead. Because, those BH6 motherboards do not have a 1/4 PCI bus divider, only a 1/3 divider. Therefore you want a higher multiplier like the 10X of the 1 gig Celly. Using a FSB of 112, which should be an easy overclock that the PCI can handle no problem, that will give you 1.12 gig. A nice overclock with your setup and without costing much. I would recommend a good CPU cooler.

Not sure what kinda cash you got but this 1.1GHz PIII (http://www.pricewatch.com/1/3/4011-1.htm) is ~$145.
Other wise as this guy said above you will get the best results with a 1GHz chip or higher no matter if PIII or celery cause of the high PCI bus. A 1.1GHz may be the ideal situation cause you should most likely hit at least around 120fsb(1320MHz) before causing major problems. On another note I could run my ST6 with PCI maxed at 44MHz and FSB @ 166fsb with no problems. Never really tried that with the older BX boards. I always ended up with a fsb around 124 and called it good as the 800e cBO I had was a dud as most of the 800e cBO's.
But if you wan to run @ a for sure 133fsb and a PCI of 44MHz get the 800 or better yet cDO 900 celery IMHO. 44MHz PCI is pushing it big time though. The 800 would be cheap but you don't know what you are getting with it though. Maybe call the company before you order to make sure.
Hi,
I have read multiple post where users said the SS bios gives a 1/4 divider @ 133.
Although the Bh6 bios sez 1/3 PCI divider in the bios..
But AGP will always be a minimum of 2/3. (89mhz @133fsb)
So if you have a (very) good graphics card you may want to go with a C900.

I would recommend the 900 or perhaps the 1Gig Cele.
I have a 900 on an old version BH6 with Abit slotket III; a very easy overclock to 1200 (133FSB).
The 1 Gig would be good but getting to 133FSB is not guarenteed...
Given a particular overall system speed, you should aim for the highest possible FSB setting, which in the case of the BH6 is limited to 133.
Go for the 1 gig .. Its only a 10 dollar difference.. You'll be guaranteed a cD0 stepping which is currently the best overclocking stepping as of right now for the Celeron.

Yean but running 44MHz PCI is dangerous with other HD's other than a 60gxp or maybe a few others I guess. My WD takes a shi# earlier than the IBM and they are both new HD/s. I can't run the WD at 44MHz PCI but the IBM's does it no problem.
Running the PCI bus above 40 MHz is a gamble at best as far as stability goes.

That a be what I am speaking off mang. I was going to do it with my old .13u PIII @ 166fsb but then I like wrecked it...Don't ask....

Many thanks to all for the advice. I will focus on the Celeron 900 or 1000. Hmm....decisions, decisions.
Just out of curiosity, why are there no proponents for the Cel 700? Checking the CPU database, it would seem that 1050 Mhz @ 100 fsb for Cel 700's, is fairly routine for older BH6's. Nosy, thats all.
Ciao.
well.. It's nice @ 1050 but a higher than 100mhz FSB is nice 2.
And that is easier to reach with a multplier lower than the 10.5 the C700 has.

Well, I have a Celeron 850@1228 1.9v.
Mine loaded 1133mhz at 1.600v on my bh6 1.01, worked great I got a r 1.2 and now I can go higher.
Very good chip for the money..
