I'm in the middle of a conroe build....
I have an unused OEM copy of XP home that would cost me $0
Is it worth paying for Pro?
The only real benefit i can see is support for dynamic disks....does that mean that I need XP pro for raid? (I plan to use the Intel Matrix driver)
Since you're planning to build a conroe, yes it would be worth paying for the pro... that is if you want to be able to run both cores.

Home can run both cores, check your info before spreading the wrong info.
and no, Pro vs home - Pro if you need to join a domain and other more office type of environments.

XP Home supports dual cores just fine.
As far as the RAID goes...I'm not sure on an answer that myself. I would figure no, because RAID is meant for high end workstations and servers. It's not often someone looking for that kind of system runs XP Home.
It couldn't hurt to try it because you already have an unused license, but if you do - be prepared to pay for Pro if it doesn't work.

you can run raid on home, because it is the controller in the mobo that runs it not windows, windows home will just see the disk as one disk.

We all make mistakes man, nobody is perfect. And Dc5e, you're thinking of dual processors which home does not support, not dual cores.
Here's another site which will help you decide if you need Pro

i had home then upgraded it to pro. i dont see any real difrence.
There really is no difference unless you need to join a domain or want to support SMP with multiple Sockets. Running software striping or mirroring would also require pro I believe.

there really is NO difference between home and pro.... no difference in kernals just some different options...
Pro has
Remote Desktop Server
IIS 5.1
Ability to do software raid
SMP...
BUT other than thoes and mabey a couple other lil things theres no difference.... HECK there is no difference in the benchmarks between windows xp pro and windows server 2003 even though win 2k3 is built on a better kernel... and more responsive in my opinion.
