I have a friends pc here, had to do the usual virus& spyware removal.
Main complaint was IE was not connecting to the internet.
Did the usual cleaning, including HiJackthis.
Believe I got them all.
Still, IE doesn't connect, times out.
I figured it was still some bug, So I copied FireFox over & installed it.
It doesn't connect either.
I can run "cmd" & ping any site just fine.
Any thoughts or ideas?

Firewall? (doesn't make sense if you can see the net on ICMP...but still worth examining.)
likely tcp/ip stack corruption from spyware/malware
this one looks good for both tcp/ip corruption and winsock fixes
http://www.xp-smoker.com/freeware.html
This is the winsock fix I usually use
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html
Try those first
let us know if it fixes it.

Well, it didn't work.
Seems I can't ping now, & neither IE or FF still doesn't connect.
Strange thing-
IE or FF is a no go. But Updates connects and installs fine. (all but 1of 24 updates)

Update KB914389 would not install, seems MS says I got hacked and it is a Security fix. (Duh)
OK, so I DL the file to fix it & it can not find a specific file "c:\71922a55f33c08c6a818\sp2qfe"
I have the XP CD, I just can't seem to locat the file, or know what it is.
If your able to talk to other boxes on the network but not connect to the internet then your gateway may be misconfigured. If auto detect doesn't work just do a ipconfig /all on another box on the network and get the settings. Then manually set the IP of the box.

I had the same issue once but I can't remember what I did but I do know it came from looking at too much porn. I think I had to go digging in the registry to find the problem.
Here to hopes of you getting this fixed.
It should take at least this many beers to fix it lol.
On the computer that you can connect to the web bring up the run box (windows + r) and type "cmd"
In the command box type "ipconfig /all > c:\ipconfig.txt"
Open the text file and make note of the settings. It will have setting like this.
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.103
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1
205.xxx.xxx.xxx
Your dhcp server, dns, and gateway may be the same. I have a wireless router between my dsl router and my computers.
DSL 192.168.0.1
Linksys 192.168.1.1
Computer1 192.168.1.103
My computer's IP address is assigned by the linksys router hence the 192.168.1.x subnet. For my computer to access the internet it needs to pass the connection through the Linksys router so its gateway is 192.168.1.1. The linksys's gateway would be 192.168.0.1.
On the computer that's not working, If you right click on the my network places icon and go to properties it will bring up a window with your connections.
Right click on the the icon which is probably labeled local area connection and first off do a repair connection.
You can basically do the same from command line with ipconfig /renew
If this doesn't work, right click on local area connection and select properties, scroll down to TCP/IP and select properties.
Check your settings and see if they are set to automatic. If they are not, set them to automatic first, click ok and try to repair the connection using the above steps.
If this fails go back to this screen and try to enter in the information from your ipconfig text file you created. make sure to use a different ip though. so if the IP on the good connection is 192.168.1.105 then use .106, etc
after you click ok, see if connect, try the internet.

ebola had some D***!!! great information. I had one thing to also think about, you said that you had your friends pc. Does that mean that you have THEIR computer at YOUR house? if that is the thing then make sure YOUR firewall isn't set to block all but the exept you have...just a thought

If ebola's stuff doesn't help you could also try first uninstalling/re-installing the networking adapter, and then un-install/install TCP/IP as an active item used by the networking adapter (from properties). Personally I'd reformat when it's that bad. Have you looked at the running processes in Task Manager to see if anything shouldn't be there. Bad machine states like that usually require more than just a good AV/Trojan scan. The free MS removal tool (from Windows Updates) is a good one to run also.
Since there is a file missing or corrupt you might want to try the system file checker:

Good luck.

Rumaging around the OS, I find no files, (ZERO) in the System32 Folder. :(
(even reset the view options on the folders)
Just to kill off some time easily, I ran the file checker, asked for the CD for 3 DLL files.
I incerted a leagal copy of HOME & it says I've got the wrong CD, so I put in the Driver recovery CD & same thing.
I think I may need to either do a repair or another clean install.
I'm gonna try Ebolas next.
I think there is no other choice than to reformat and re-install at this point. Having zero files in system 32 folder is not a good thing, though does not explain why your system actually boots. This problem falls subject to the old 2 hour rule, If you can't fix it in 2 hours reformat and re-install, if you follow that you will save yourself countless hours of troubleshooting. Also note that in the corporate world if you encounter this type of issue its usually 1 hour if not 30 minutes.
