Hi guys, A friend of mine whats to upgrade his Socket 478 2.6GHz Northwood Celeron in his Dell to something a little more speedier. I'm not very familiar with Intels line of processors, what is the fastest P4 he can just drop into this? Thanks for your help :)

The info from CPU-Z says
Name: Intel Celeron
Codename: Northwood
Corespeed: 2600MHz
Multiplier: x26.0
FSB: 100MHz
Bus Speed: 400MHz

hmmmm... i dont think your gonna be able to upgrade... the board may not support 800mhz fsb.... looks at the specs on the board or find them.

check the motherboard tab and see what it says for a chipset. other wise the fastest 400fsb bus chip he can get is a northwood core 2.8ghz P4. going from the celeron to a p4 will be a big difference even if it was the same speed.

The only Northwoods that I see on newegg is this one

Will this work?

kinda hard to tell...did you look in the motherboard tab in cpu-z?

Dell is often not upgradeable because they use the cheapest components that just match the hardware you have. Upgrading to something faster/hotter probably wouldn't be supported in the bios or by the hardware.
For example, I tried upgrading a Dell gx520. More memory and it booted fine but soon it crapped out. A dual processor that their literature offers as an alternative isn't supported in the bios. I did a bios upgrade and it recognized the CPU but kept dying. I put all the original components back in and it works fine.
Time for a new computer if you want something reliable.

The motherboard tab in CPUz says it's an Intel i845G Chipset.
The i845 chipset will not support 800 bus Northwoods nor will it support any Prescott P-4/Celeron D processors. It "should" support 533 bus Northwoods though. About the highest I would recommend is the 2.8 533 bus Northwood with 512k cache (which is the newegg one you posted in an earlier link).
Not really sure it would be worth trying to upgrade that computer though. Adding more RAM might be a better bang for the buck if you can find some cheap enough.

well the easiest thing to do for more speed is to oc it. No im not kidding you can oc a dell. PIN MOD TIME!!!! first thing search for 533fsb pin mods for older p4s then look for voltage pin mods. as for 3.4ghz from a celey seems to be easy from what i have seen. They have less cache so they can oc farther on default voltage. For a celey to hit that speed i would think 1.4-1.45 volts will be needed. You will also want to get a better hsf on it as well just in case.
Free stuff is always so much better then spending money.
