View Full Version : Best processor for my budget
My computer fried. Yes, i left it on, went out to a fire in the back, and when I came back in, it read "Disk error" or something. Anywho, poped in another hdd thinking my hdd just died.. but when I re-instaled windows, each one froze, and wouldn't install. So now I think its the mobo which was damaged by the PSU. Long story short, i need a new cpu, ram, motherboard, video card, and power supply, hopeing to keep it below 550 dollers. I already got a case, fans, dvd drive.
My plan: Get all parts from memoryexpress.com (Not newegg, im canada, has to be memoryexpress). I won't be gameing, at ALL, maybe mohaa but thats it. No gaming for me until DX10. So i'll pick up a X300 more then likely, off ebay. That leaves me with around 550 for the rest of the parts. I will by overclocking, a LOT, so i'll be picking up a Sythe Ninja Plus. Thats now 500 for the rest of the parts. I was thinking:
Processor: ?????
Ram: Mushkin EM2-5300 DDR2 1 gig kit (512x2) - 120
Motherboard: Unsure of, if someone could pick one out on that site greatly apprecieated
PSU: Silverstone 500 watt Element - 110
Harddrive: Seagate 80GB Barracuda 7200.9 SATA II w/ NCQ, 8MB Cache - 60
Good setup so far? I want to keep the motherboard+cpu under 250 dollars. Its ok if i go a little above budget, but not to much. Main objective of this computer is to run messenger, vegas 6.0, aim, internet, music, videos, decodeing videos, etc.

CPU: intel 915
why you ask price is really low it is a C1 stepping and can hit 4ghz with stock volts from what we have seen so far.

go with a single one gig now and add another later

mobo ocing really well, gigabyte has come back hitting hard

not sure how that psu you listed fairs but for not much more this one is better imo.

the HD is fine im using one my self. i dont think i went over you $$ to much, the ocz psu has a MIR for $25.
Thanks a bunch for the reply man. I was thinking of the 805 but since the 915's have been crazy overclockers that sounds even better. The PSU, i've used silverstone for a while and I love them.. so i'll stick with them for now.
But are you 100% sure its a C1 stepping? what if its not?

hmm well there are both Do and c1. call them up and ask to have them look for this spec number SL9DA =C1 will be at the end of the Prod. code.

not the 915 per say but the new C1 core is ocing to 4ghz with stock volts. the lower multi with the 915 will allow a nice fsb a long as the board can get there and the DS3 can get there.

If that's the objective:
AMD Athlon-64 3800 x2 $150-$155
ASRock 939Dual-SATA2 Socket 939 $65

nods, this would be a better but i was kinda future proofing the setup. as the mobo i suggested supports C2D, should he need more power later.

^ True... for the future route.... I can't complain because I ordered the DS3, I'll have the DS3 in a few days w/ the e6300.

yep spend slighty more now to spend slighty less when you upgrade. ie not having to buy another mobo just to get a faster/better cpu.
I dislike AMD, only for a few little problems I have with them. I'll never buy anything other then a socket 775 processor. I was thinking, wait for next paycheck, then buy a E6300 instead of the 915. good idea?

sounds even better as the e6300 at stock can take on the fastest clocked (stock) "netburst" cpu. Good news is that with the e6300 you should see a fsb oc around 450 give or take. I would look for 400fsb 24/7 use, even at 2.8ghz there is not any cpu that could match it. well expect the X6800 but that is clocked at 2.93ghz. GL and post what oc you get! Have you thought about a aftermarket HS? if you dont plan to oc at all and just go stock speeds i would highly suggest a Ninja hs with a 42cfm yateloon would be a really quite box. what kinda case you gonna use?

Great idea, because just getting your foot into this new Intel architecture will suffice CPU needs for a few years.
I'll take it that value select needs under 2.0v to work... DS3 boot requirements are a little touchy ATM, right, evil?. All and all this system will be a real thoroughbred for the money.

my abit board is touchy as well but im lucky to have the c4's being able to boot up with 1.8v. also if he email tankguys im sure they would mail him some ram.
this would really be better for ya and its cheaper to, well i think it is cheaper.

I would tell ya to look for ram that needs 1.8v or 1.9v at rated speeds of 667mhz.
I guess i should post why I dislike every other socket cept for 775. Its pinless. So you can't break pins. I've broken to many pins before ruining cpu's, so i fell in love with the 775 :)
So 6300 + DS3. Now i have to pick out new DDR800 ram though...
The set I just ordered was only $162 after MIR on newegg and it's 2GB. If that's not to expensive for your budget, it's a great deal. However the offer ends today, 8-22-2006, so if you want 'em, now is the time.

For your needs dd2-533/667 is more then enough. Unless your ocing i wouldnt consider dd2-800 ram.

no i'll be oc'ing a lot, lol, thats the reason why im buying the Sythe Ninja Plus ;), just need to find DDR800 ram thats good at oc'ing and thats cheap.
