I'm not sure if this is the hard drive or not. I am building my first computer and I have everything set up. Here's a list of the components:
Mobo - EPoX EP-9HEAI
Proc - AMD Athalon 64 3800+ Venice
Vid Card - MSI RX1300Pro
Ram - Kingston ValuRam PC3200 2x512mb
HD - WD 120G (boot drive), IBM 20G
Everything seems to be running fine, I can get into the BIOS and it seems to start up fine. When it tries to load the OS from the HD, it gives me an error that says "disk read error. press ctrl+alt+del to restart."
The WD HD was the only component that was bought used. It works fine and boots up fine on my other machine (this one).
Does anyone have any ideas on what the problem might be?

this may sound stuipd, so don't think i'm insulting your intelligence...
but do you have a floppy drive installed with a disk inside it?
i have done that hundreds of times when i used to have and use a floppy drive. i'd forget to eject the disk, and it would try to read the floppy, instead of the HDD.

No, I don't have a floppy installed. I have the HD set to boot first anyways. Thanks for checking though, knowing me, it isn't out of the question! :D
Anyone else?

do you have the correct disk booting? Also try repairing the install from the windows CD and see if that helps.

Yup, I have windows installed on the WD drive, and its set as master. Yesterday I repaired the Windows installation and that didn't help...

fdisk that new 120G drive. Kill all partitions. do a fdisk /mbr and only run that 120G drive, remove the IBM 20G. re-install windows xp on the 120gig.

How do I "fdisk/mbr" the drive?

Finally got around to formatting/reinstalling with just the 1 drive in. It worked out fine, and I got windows running and everything! Thanks, terran2k.

Do you have 2 HD's in your rig right now? What I did is I took one out, leaving the drive that I intended to be the boot drive in the rig (as master, of course). Boot with your Windows CD and choose to format (not the quick format, the full format) the drive and re-install Windows.
After I did that, everything was gravy. :)
