I took my friends laptop home because she was having some problems with it. When she started it up she got this error right away : Windows could not start because the following files is missing or corrupt <Windows Root>\system32\hal.dll.

So I thought fine, either SP2 is acting up or spyware. So I started to reformat, but the problem is it crashes about 20 seconds into the reformat. So my guess now is hardware not software problem. Its a Toshiba Satellite, if that helps. Any ideas?

Try using an Ultimate Boot CD. It will scan the HD for errors as well as Ram test and other test for the PC.

If you don't have a copy of Ultimate Boot CD then you can get it here.

http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/

Will tell you how to download it and burn to cd.
