Download Speed

I am hooked to the internet through a Linksys G type router which is hooked to a cable modem. My connection speed says 36.0 Mbps, however when I am downloading things the download monitor says in the neighborhood of 9 Kbps.

Any ideas on the discrepancy and how I could speed things up?

That depends greatly on the site in which you are downloading from, most sites will limit download speed to something reasonable, bandwidth is expensive! Try this website to check your download and upload speed.

Wireless is alot slower than wired, if you want run a Cat5 cable from the router (If it supports it)

If you can't try to get a new router or hook from the cable modem.

Are you sure your monitoring program is correctly monitoring?

Yeah, it came in handy when charter asked me if i wanted to upgrade to their 5Mbps download and i agreed for a 1 month trial and this site and many others proved i was still downloading at 3Mbps!! I quickly cancelled. :)

Well I ran TestMy.net. The computer that hooks to the router by cable I get:
DL Connection 369 Kbps
DL Speed 45Kbps

After changing channels on the wireless I am getting almost those #s.

We are on charter cable, should those #s be higher? At work with charter cable we are getting almost 4 x those #s.

I also have charter and i assume you have the 3Mbps service right? If so your numbers should be a lot higher than that! I would suggest power cycling your modem and router and try the test again, on the wired computer. Do you download torrents or anything like that? I know after a day of downloading torrents my router slows to a snails pace, after a power cycle it's good to go again.

the 36Mbps is the speed of your wireless network not the speed your getting going out on the net.

Yeah, the 36Mbps is your wireless LAN connection speed. You're only pulling in 3Mbps, or so through you modem. So it doesn't matter whether you're hard wired to your modem or not, you'll still get the same speed, as you've seen.

My questions for you would be what exactly are you using to download stuff? Bittorrent, other p2p, cnet/download.com, some other download site? Do you get crappy speeds no matter where you're downloading stuff from, or is it on a certian application?

Sorry don't know what torrents is, so I guess I don't download it. Or do you mead lots of stuff? I just download through FIrefox. I will try the router power cycleing when I return. Off to see King Tut now.

Your running SLOW. Here's a screen shot of my test results, pay attention to the download connection and download speed. I have the 3Mbit service from charter as i'm sure you do as well, if your downloading at 45kbps you got a problem.
