hey guys,
I've been playing with my E6600 and DS3 for some time, but my temps seem crazy. When running at 3.3ghz @ 1.38 volts and dual priming my temps hit 67*C according to Core temp. My idle temps are even 54. Cooling wise I have a lapped big typhoon that kept my 165 at 46*C full load (same room temps). I've reseated the big typhoon 6 times and applied the AS5 a few different ways (small grain of rice in the middle, spreading with razor blade...). Case cooling is up to the task as taking the side off only yields a 2-3*c drop. Any ideas for me besides lap the IHS?
TIA

you shouldnt have to spread as5, you just put it in the middle and the pressure spreads it around. Have you double checked that your making good contact with the big typhoon?

I disagree with the drop method. I tried it once, and after I removed my hsf agian, it wasnt throughly spread. Try this method, people will disagrree with me, but it works.

Put alot of AS5 on the core, double that of the thin layer. Then a big drop in the center(3 grains of rice size). then apply your HSF. Report temps.

wow telling him to reapply as5 before it has a chance to burn-in. let it burn in first then if you think you temps are still to high the reapply. The cores are in the middle so you should only have to put a "rice" sized in the middle. I have don a half rice on the hs and half on ihs. with a yateloon on my ninja still stock e6400 speeds under dual FAH load temps from "core temp" are in the 55-57c for both.

if you are really worried about your temps that much there is only one thing to do step up your cooling, go water.

how much as5 you need depends i expect on how flat your ihs is.
I have gotten into the habit with my preslers of putting more on since most of them seem quite concave, but the e6400 seems pretty flat so hopefully intel has fixed whatever they were doing wrong with presslers.

I have several BT's, and have lapped most of them to get a smoother surface although they were all pretty flat. None of them had smoothly finished surfaces.

My 6400 is running 55-57C based on core temp at 430/1.4625 dual folding - on a p5b-d atm.
Idle temps aren't much lower 51-52C.

Drop in the middle (has always worked for me) and remember you have to heat and cool the CPU over a period of 200 hours for the AS5 to set up completely. Also your chip just might not be able to run at 3.3 as some will hit the "wall" sooner than others.

Your pushing a good bit of voltage there. I run my at 3.2ghz with 1.325v. I idle around 45c with the BT and load at 55c. Try seeing if you can run this combination stable and what your temps are as the 100mhz is probably not worth the extra .055v. Otherwise you may need to move to a WC'ing solution.

thanks for the input guys.
From my previous experences AS5 set ins usually only net a couple degree drop in temps. My big typhoon is as flat as I could get it, and I never had any type of issue with my opteron 165 @ 2.9ghz and 1.425volts.
temps at stock voltages and 3.2ghz dont make much of a difference, right now I'm trying to figure out what this core will do so I've slowly been bumping up the core/fsb...
I've been wc'd and thought it was a huge pain for someone like me (who likes to take apart their system often).

the drop in the middle has always worked for me as well and Ive found it delivers optimal temps and saves a hell of alot of t.i.m from going to waste. If you guys who dont like just putting the "grain of rice" sized drop in the middle decided you didnt like it because it didnt look like it spread out to cover the ihs properly put a little more down and try it again. it doesnt need to cover the ihs 100% to work properly the temps can speak for themselves that it does work.

to the op what is your ambient room temp? Ive read about some of the conroes running hot when overclocked/volted but it doesnt seem like yours has much over stock voltage and Id think that hsf would be able to keep it cooler than that under load. I wish I would have played with mine more on air when I got it I installed it with a crappy celeron hsf to verify it was working then threw it under the machII and its been frozen ever since so I dont have any kind of first hand knowledge maybe someone whos good with all the math and thermodynamic calculations can come in and do the math on how much heat your cpu should be generating at those speeds/volts and go from there

Room Temp is pretty hot durring the day (28*C or so), so I can see why it would be running warm, not this hot however. I'm thinking about investing in a ninja plus to see if that would cool it better/be a better setup for the socket location on this board...
