View Full Version : Possible Conroe multi unlock up/down with the ASUS P5B?

There is an update review of the ASUS P5B with new BIOS at anandtech...
http://www.anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.aspx?i=2822&p=1

With new BIOS (0507 BIOS dated 8/10/2007) Anand hit FSB in excess of 530 on low multi's and in excess of 440 with 8 x multi. This is the board that I was banking on working well with a new BIOS update so I will probably purchase soon rather than wait for the ATI chipset boards.

Here is the killer statement; ASUS has made the claim that they have been able to unlock upwards a number of Conroes with this BIOS on this mobo! Anand had no luck but apparently there exist in the wild conroes that will unlock upwards...surely ASUS would not have made this claim with an ES or 6800 plugged in...

What I currently know is that multi was unlock with my ES when I tried P5B

waiting for retail owners to confirm that

And good news with asus announcing they are working the same way to unlock multi with P5W DH

cross fingers :)

this has been confirmed all over XS forums

Wait, am I hearing something wrong here? Maybe I need glasses or a hearing aid?

The P5B motherboard actually unlocks the multiplier on sub X6800 processors? ie: the 6600 I just ordered?

It unlocks downward multipliers. On some it might unlock upward, but I haven't checked if anyone has reported finding a chip that will yet.

yes supposedly going up also, but I have not seen anyone with a cpu unlocked going up only down.

Yeah I knew that guys on XS had unlocked downwards with this board and Gigabyte offerings, but I was not aware that it was possible to unlock upwards as ASUS claims. I remember reading that the Badaxe boards had a mysterious solder point which if the traces were connected one could unlock multi's upwards but I had not seen this confirmed either.

looks like a P5P Deluxe will be in my case very soon.

The badaxe claims were horsesh*t.

Is this just with the P5B deluxe... or the regular P5B as well? The motherboard scene gets more and more interesting everyday...

I'll check my P5BD when I get home. But last I saw in BIOS only 6 and 7 were selectable. Doubt this is going t work.

6-8 available on my DS3.

What are the chances Intel can do a revision to stop this? I have no idea how it actually works and it's pretty wierd that it varies by CPU.

Not really. All the CPUs are essentially the same... the key difference being that the chips are been verified to be stable up to a particular speed. That doesn't mean that it wouldn't be stable at a HIGHER speed... but it also means that it doesn't mean that it would.

If they overproduced E6600s and needed more E6400s they could just limit the multi to 8. But you'd have no way of knowing whether your chip maxxed out at 8 or whether you have a multi limited 6600.

i'll believe this whole "unlocked multi" thing when i see it.

"They" have unlocked multipliers, but I'm curious with respect to the mobo optimization; that seems to be a curve ball right now.

I've been building computers and oc'ing since 1998 soo thanks for the noobie info ;) What I was referring to was the 'some CPUs can do different things' wrt some being able to unlock upwards statement in the Anandtech article.

:bang head The multiplier is ONLY UNLOCKED DOWN.

NO 10X for me. I just installed my P5B-Deluxe.
Temps are pretty high, but she overclocks well.
