Hey guys! This is my first real comparitive post with benchmarks so be kind. I bought a Dell XPS 400 about 3 months ago for a good price with the 820D 2GB ram and a Geforce 6800. Now that the price on the D series are dropping I wanted to do an upgrade. I purchased the 945 from newegg along with some artic silver. I had never used that stuff nor played with the D series processors before. Anyway, the swap was REALLY easy. I dont have a way to check temps, but the 120mm fan is not running as fast so it must be better. I also added another Gb of ram while doing this. The computer booted fine, CPUZ shows everything right. Here are some scores, they are not overclocked, I have no way to do that on here. BTW, I will post some scores with my new 7900gs from woot, it shipped out today!

Pentium 820D @ 2.8ghz - 3gb ram
39m 17.797sec 32M SuperPi calculation
47.531sec 1M SuperPi calculation

Pentium 945D @ 3.4ghz - 3gb ram
34m 7.750sec 32M SuperPi calculation
39.188 sec 1M SuperPi calculation

PcMark04 2.8ghz 3Gb Ram
5368 score

PcMark04 3.4ghz 3Gb Ram
6493 score

3DMark 05 Geforce 6800 442/830
5202 score

Humm, I did read the post, and I was thinking since the post was made on 08-25-06, 09:49 PM that he might have a new Mobo, temp software, PSU all the things to answer my simple curious question. Oh well maybe you just forgot to read the post date. ooookkkkk

members are not accusomed to people digging up old post.. but reading post and doing reaserch then asking questions that might be difficult for you to understand bla bla bla..

anyway.. things to look for in an upgrade.. a good core2duo compatable mobo, they are compatable with your CPU (you'll see suggestions in alot of the recent threads here) and a stought high quality OEM PSU.. 32+ amps on the 12V (most of my PSU recomendations meet this other then the Enhance 80+ 500W I recomend for C2D build if you search for my PSU recos. ) single rail for overclocking presslers (wich will be more then adiquite for upgrades)

Im sorry I might not be accustomed to your ways, however I may be from Texas where you speak when spoken to, and Im sorry but how do you know what people are accustomed to? This is a forum not a debate room, so thanks for you thoughts. And remember to use spell check.

My ways? I dont mind it at all personaly, I give advice as the questions are asked.. and I don't know why I would defend anyone being rude to be honest, Im a bit tired and my thoughts are a bit on the rambling side. WE don't want to come off rude AT ALL... So I appoligize If any of my above statments were rude or defending rude behavior.
I'm from the south as well, so I know exactly what your talking about.. I have over 6,100 posts and maybe 14 threads started by myself.
Spellcheck? well.. the web browsing computer is a bit low on ram right now so a good one is tough to run.. Untill then it would hamper my ability to effecently post advice, and thats not something I want to do right now. So once I get browsing on a better comp. or more ram I'll get right on the spellcheck thing honest :)

:welcome: to OCF.. if you have any other questions or would like me to clarify any of my advice just shoot me a question.. I will take a shot at answering them.

for a jumping off point..
http://processorfinder.intel.com/details.aspx?sSpec=SL9QB
http://processorfinder.intel.com/details.aspx?sSpec=SL9QQ

one of these is your processor.. stock voltage ranges are listed..
how far one can go over that is generaly 10-15%ish depending on your load temperatures (thermal spec. is listed as well and would be the temp your trying to stay at or under)

On load would be durring dual instances of prime95 or orthose prime.. small fft.
not having any luck finding linkage on orthose right now or I'd hook you up :)

when overclocking and tweaking your ram (timings and Vdimm).. burn this ISO and boot to it and run a few rounds of test 5 for quick ram stability testing, then run the full test for ~8hrs or so at your top clock that you wish to use..

I spent almost a solid month playin with the bios, a finally reached a happy median.
I ran prime 95 small and large fft's for 12 hours and decided that I was happy, never had a single glitch or reboot. And my temps stay at 41, however my case has some serious CFM flowing in and out. It is not your quiet machine, it sounds like it is about to take off. But it sure is fast and stable.

If I wanted to go any faster I would probably need to step into some faster Ram. Correct?

If Im doing the math right your ram runs 266mhz stock frequency.. and your mulitplier is 17 so.. 266*17= 4.522ishGhz (as I said if Im doing the math on your ram right)

your vcore limit ~1.51-1.52 and your CPU temp limit is 63.4C.. sounds like your limit is from running her a bit cooler then you have to (and likely less Vcore then you "can" )

I upped the voltage some till I got to 1.45v and was never able to get past the wall of 4.10Ghz. Oh well I guess I will be content at this speed for now.

Most likely the mobo's FSB limitation your running into *or CPU temps*.

Ya' it is a budget board, but I did get 2 PCIe slots with the board, so for cheap and the fact I can run a few monitors it was worth it. Too bad I dont have matching cards.
