I just read over the thread talking about how the new IBM supercomputer would put us at rank 1 in 4 hours and it made a random thought pop into my head.

My school has a supercomputer center. I noticed it one day while searching for a parking spot. I wonder if they would allow me access to run SETI for a few hours one day if it's not being used.

Anyone know how I might go about figuring this out? I'm a 3rd year computer science student at UC San Diego.

Well that depends on what kind of operating system it's using. Also the seti client is not multithreaded, so it doesn't benefit from multiple processors, unless you run multiple clients.

just read a report on a supercomputer being set up here in Oz,down the road from me
called "pinnacle blue" its gonna cost $100 million
major partners: IBM and Cisco
10th biggest unclassified supercomputer and the biggest commercial one in the world!

and 2 Teraflops!!!!

Funny how that price depreciation works. Costs like hell when new. Resell value drops immediately, but if it's old enough the price goes up as it becomes a museum piece. I wonder what Eniac would go for these days?

Mabey we should throw the supercomputer on the new 'slow computer' team account!! Who do you want to win the race? Cy or Mitclan? (I think I got them right.... Right?)

The slow computer team accounts are Basher and myself. I have the 'Collective' and Basher has the other, if he puts it back. There is a good challenge there. All junk machines run under one of the group accounts and may the best of the worse win.

Actually, that puzzles me too. None of these comps are better than Dual PII's at 300mhz running 2 processes. They have 5 turned in already - and I was expecting them to take 24 - 48 hours before I saw any results.
