View Full Version : Question about mobile internet offered by cellular companies
I am really thinking about it since I am on a college network which is very slow and I get pretty high latencies due to there servers/routers being overloaded. So I am wondering how laggy a cell providers would be. Better than Satellite? I don't need that much speed but the network where I am can take over 10 sec before it loads a webpage and I used to do a little gaming but I am just worried about the latency being so high since my browser does timeout pretty often waiting for a page to load. Also with it I was wondering if the speeds of like 400 Kilobits would be fast enough to use skype? Also is it less laggy than what satelite would provide?
Thanks,
delman
I don't know what it's like wherever you are, but here there are 2 standards: GPRS and 3G. GPRS is sort of on a par with 56k - I don't know the actual speed but that's what it feels like; slow. 3G is a bit faster but has limited coverage, big cities and the suchlike.
Correct me if I'm wrong, this is just what I know and I could be inadvertantly talking out of my backside.

I believe Cingular's EDGE network is faster than GPRS, but I could be mistaken.
Keep in mind, you'll be paying ~$20/mo. minimum for unlmited service and I'm positive it wont be much faster, if not slower than your current connection.
