I recently got high speed internet with a DSL (USB) connection. The connection itself is working fine. But the problem is, when I try to download from RapidShare, it won't let me download. It gives this message, "You requested this download-session from a different IP than yours." I checked the status screen for my internet connection and it has two different addresses, Server IP address and Client IP address. Does anyone know what I need to do in order to be able to download from RapidShare?

If anything it's your USB network wannabe thingie. Use real ethernet. Its better anyways. Maybe make a sshot so we can see what this "server IP address" is supposed to be or at least tell us the first 3 numbers of each address

Simplified explanation:

There are two differant kinds of ip-addresses, public ones and private ones. Ip-addresses are used for communication between computers, and to do it in the internet you need to use public ones. Alot of modems however work by grabbing a public one, and assigning a private one to your computer. The logic is, that you might only get one ip-address from your isp, but have more computers. This way the modem is the only public one, and ALL your computers get a private one. Any time a computer like this is connected to the internet, the ip-address the world will see is the one the modem has (and the modem takes care of forwarding all the traffic to the computer who initiated the connection).

The problems this can cause is not when your computers make connections, rather when somebody else tries to make a connection to you. Any connection you started will be in the modems memory and directed to you, but any connection started outside will be blocked at the modem, as it won't know what to do with the traffic coming in.

To get around this problem you can do a port forward. Find out what port the traffic is coming to, and change the modems settings so that any connection comming to the port is directed to your computers private address.

This is assumming your computer is getting a private ip...

This is not a problem with rapidshare. It works fine for people behind routers

Klingens - the first three numbers for the Server IP is 192, and it's 216 for the client IP.

dropadrop - your post kind of explains a few things to me, thanks. But I still have no idea how to fix the problem though.

please post the output of "ipconfig.exe" in a DOS box.

It could be your ISP doesn't give you full internet access with a real internet address but only gives you a private IP. If that's the case, ditch your ISP. ANother possibility is that you're behind a router. Maybe tell us the exact name and model of your DSL modem and the usb wannabe netwrok card you use.

Yes, but this is a bit strange with your PPP adapter: Your IP is the same as your default gateway.... Not really possible with TCP/IP.

The ethernet LAN setting is a DHCP setting without any IP gotten.

Is this ppp connection for your USB inet connection?

Please see RFC 3330 for an explanation of your IP address.

klingens - I don't know much about theses things so I'm not sure how to answer your question. Maybe you an elaborate a bit more?

Captain Newbie - Where can I find this article you're talking about?

Using the Force (http://www.google.com/), Luke, reveals that RFC 3330 may be found here (http://www.rfc-ignorant.org/rfcs/rfc3330.php).

In summary, you haven't been properly assigned an IP address unless you're _supposed_ to be using that address range for your connection. You should contact your ISP for further details and assistance.
