I have been away from the tech far too long, im still running my lame socket A with a 2600+ (which is dying...)
I am really looking into buying a 6600.
I am looking at the DFI Infinity 975 board, with OCZ platinum 2x1gb DDR2 800 ram.
I wanted to see if those parts would all work together. Again, this will most likely remain stock, maybe a slight OC, but with a chip this fast, i do not see the need for the OC.
I will mainly be compiling projects (for school), doing some video editing, and some graphic design. I will be playing some games on it as well.
Right now i am running a 6800GT (agp) card, i know those AGP/PCI-E boards are generally pretty lame and crappy quality, but would i be able to get away with running one so i could save 200+ on buying a new video card??

Since this is Overclockers.com I would like to see you overclocking. lol Here is my OC recommendation:
1. E6600 is a great choice. Best bang for the buck with 4mb cache. Check my signature.
2. I would definitely get some Gskill HZ's DDR2-800. Mine clock a hair over 1100 mhz @ 4-4-4-10.
3. The highest FSB'ing mobo on the market right now is the P5B-Deluxe. A lot of us are having great results on here with it.

Well yes and no...
I was running the 775Dual-VSTA. So was Gautam. Gautam's died on him. I couldn't get the board to run stable at any speed less than DDR 1400 (700.65mhz in CPUz) while that may sound good... I don't think it's so good for my cheap CAS5 800 DDR2s...
Couldn't get 533 to run stably for more than a few hours. And the board doesn't do 800. It's 667 setting actually runs at 700. If you use Flexibility mode you can bring it down to a more realistic level, but there's too much craziness involved. It's that Via chipset. I would imagine it would be the same with any of those boards.
Sell your 6800 GT and get this:

...Gigabyte 7600GS. 110 bucks. That's what I've got.

The only problem with that setup is that after I throw in a 7900GT (~230ish) that pushes the cost just over a 1000 bucks. I really want that 4mb cache... I guess i could always just go with the cheaper 6400 or the 6300...

...or a cheaper video card. You were just talking about keeping a 6800GT. What do you want a 7900GT for? You could even get a 7800GT or another 6800GT in PCI-E if you want. Although if you look at this chart... http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2825&p=9
you'll see the advantages of a 7600GS.
Granted you won't be able to run Oblivion at the highest quality level or anything... but who needs to?
Also it always makes more sense to give the preference to the CPU over the graphics card as, in practice, you'll be replacing the video card a LOT sooner than you'll be replacing the CPU.

Right now the 4mb cache adds about 1 to 10% cpu ability. Later on after more apps and games are written to take advantage of it this will become more apparent. I would go with the cheaper video card and get a new one when the DX10 compliant cards are produced.

Just an add on to the cache thingy. The roadmap for Intel shows chips with 8processors and 12mb of cache. Cache will be more important.
