I loaded up RealVNC on each machine in my little home network and it's working quite well. However, most of my machines don't need the VNC taking up unnecessary RAM space all the time. Given that, I'd like to be able to start and stop the RealVNC service remotely from my main rig. Anybody know of a good open source program that will cooperate with WinXP Home and Pro?

I used to use VNC, but I didn't like it always running either. I just use remote desktop now. You should be able to telnet and start/stop services though, I think.

the vnc server usually only uses about 3 megs of ram, at least tightvnc does for me. However, iirc firedaemon is a remote services manager. I'm not sure about open source and what not because I have not even fiddled with this program for about 3 years.

I always just use Remote Desktop too, it is included with XP, it works well, and only runs when you make a connection to the computer. Any reason why it doesn't work for you?

It doesn't only run when you make a connection. It always has to run in one way or other.

I just never used remote desktop before, and so didn't even give it a chance. I used VNC when I was working IT for FSU, and it was great. Prehaps I'll give it a try.

It would work, you just need access to the files referenced in that article.
