I'm planning on upgrading my PIII 500 processor within the next few months, but am unsure which one to choose. I have an Abit BE6 mobo, and am considering either the PIII 1 Ghz or Celeron 1.1 Ghz processors. Obviously the Celeron is the cheaper of the two, and I'm wondering what the performance difference of the two is. I'm willing to overclock (a little) whichever CPU I get. Would the Celeron overclocked be near the PIII performance? Also, for both CPU's, would I need extra hardware, etc. for the CPU to work? Additionally, what settings in the BIOS would have to be changed, both for the PIII and the Celeron? Overall, what CPU would you guys recommend most? Basically, anything you guys can tell me about these two processors and how they would work on my mobo would be appreciated :). Thanks.

I think you should jump ship and get a socket A mobo and a Duron or Athlon. A lot more friendly to the overclocker...

You can get a ECS K7S5A mobo for sub $60 and a duron 750 for about $30. I overclocked this combo to 1.0Ghz, and it rocks. That is the cheapest combo I might suggest, but there are many others, most of which would give you a lot more overclocking options. My Epox 8KHA with the right processor will give you super results, and no jumpers, all in the bios...Although I would now get the 8KHA+

I wouldn't say friendlier... I'd probably say Intel is because the core isn't as fragile and the don't produce as much heat.

I would say its probably a better combo to go with a AMD setup though. (maybe T-bird with an ECS board for stability)

You probably want to flash your bios with the most updated version from abit's site.

If possible, get a P3 1000 chip with the 100mhz bus and cD0 stepping. Second choice would be a 1100 celeron if your motherboard does indeed support that high a celeron chip...

You've already got enough to digest so let me just say "welcome". :)

id say go with the PIII 1GHZ if you can get the cDo stepping, because that will almost certainly hit 1.2, and people have gotten it up to 1.4 using air cooing.....also for speed equivalence a 1.1 Celeron will vbe about as fast as a PIII900....

I have the exact same mobo and chip and maybe the same chip.. 500 katmai..

Anyways I would recommend either if you have cash to blow.. Go for the P3 .. if you were to save some go for the celeron..

1gig they are both guaranteed cD0 stepping.. Also your motherboard is slot 1... You will need a Slotket to run ...

I'd prob buy the Celeron 1gig and then save that left over cash for SK-6 man :)

Would I need a slotket to run either the PIII or the Celeron, or just the Celeron? Thanks.

You'll need a slotket for either..

Those chips are Socket 370 .. And obviously you have a slot..

I believe Intel made Slot's up to 800.. :) and 800 is a good buy just get that some dual alpha maybe if you were to just get a slot.

Welcome :)
I just made a similar upgrade on an Asus P3B-F... 500 p3 to a 750 p3. This was the best choice I could have made. I got the latest bios from Asus' website and woohoo :) With a no-name hsf I can hit 1 Ghz with very little temp difference (750=90 f and 1000=100-102 f) I'd recommend you go with a coppermine p3 anywhere from 700 to 850 and overclock a little ;)

Intel does make a slot1 P3-1000E (cC0 stepping) proc, I'm running 1 on my BH6 board. It will do 1120/112fsb with no problems using an Alpha 3125S cooler with 2 sunon 23 cfm fans. It is a retail chip and comes with a pretty decent looking cooler; I just like to make sure that nothing gets too hot because this old board doesn't monitor cpu temp. They are a little pricey though; I paid around $230 for it about 6 months ago. Also, if you get a slotket, the cD0 stepping P3-1000E flip chips overclock better than the cC0 stepping parts and 1330 is fairly easily attainable. I'm presently waiting for Christmas for my wife to give me my new motherboard so I can run the flip chip 1000E I bought about a month ago at 1330. I tried it on this BH6 board but the lack of a 1/4 pci divider was giving too many problems due to the high pci bus speeds.

I'm having a similar problem on my Asus p3b-f. It has the 1/4 pci divider, but no 1/2 agp divider... so my video card and agp slot are both holding me back... :( I just like the mobo to darn much to upgrade :p

I know what you mean about your board. I had to think long and hard before deciding to upgrade my old BH6 board because it's been so reliable. I finally decided to a Soyo 6BA+ 100 board because it uses the good old BX chipset, which is still pretty darn good as far as performance goes. I've also ordered a Geforce3 Ti 500 vid card to run in it. I've read that the nvidia chipset video cards will handle the high agp speeds real well; I read either at anandtech or THG a year or 2 ago that the voodoo 3 cards had problems with a 89 mhz agp bus.

I'm still debating a new mobo... I think I'll just get new cards that don't fail at the higher bus speeds on this one though:D
