View Full Version : Bottlenecked?

I recently got on of the 7900GS's from the launch at newegg. I was really excited, because I thought it would be a huge upgrade from my 6600GT. The truth is, I'm really not noticing that much of a difference... I'm pretty sure I have the correct drivers installed and everything. Could the issue be that I have the incorrect drivers, or I'm bottlenecked by my CPU? Or, is it just that there isn't that much of a difference between the cards (I doubt it)?

What scores are you getting in 3dmark05 and 06? What games are you not seeing a jump in performance in?

I am running that card in a cheap computer with a 3200+ sempron (http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=472819) at 2.2ghz and I see a jump in performance from my x800gto2 but then again my overclock is high.

I'll have the scores for you in a bit, sorry, should have come prepared with em. In WoW, I really haven't noticed a jump in FPS. I tested out CS, I could run everything on high with about 10 bots ok. I didn't really play it before, so I cant compare that. Battlefield 2 I used to run everything at low, and I now run it at medium ok-ly.

the only game that you have mentioned so far that has not really seen a jump is WOW which IMO is not very graphics intensive. I have run that game fine with many different cards so it is not very suprising to me that you have not seen a big jump.

run 3dmark and then we will talk.

Bleh, I'm gonna have to get those benchmarks tomorrow. The second test was going too slow and changed a frame like every 3 minutes, so I'll run it tonight.

You are not running 3Dmarks06, are you :P?

Make sure that your drivers are fresh, and test out 3dmark05....

You may want to uninstall your drivers and run driver cleaner. Be careful with driver cleaner it can cause a disaster. Be sure you pick the nVidia display adaptor only! Then reinstall a fresh copy of the drivers. Reboot after uninstall, reboot after cleaning and reboot after new install. Then reboot 5 more times while singing the bottles of beer song! Just kidding on the last part but it might add a little luck.

in 3dmark06 I got 3875. Don't have 05.

What are your core and memory speeds, also what drivers are you using? I can run my system with the same drivers at the same speeds and see what I get.

Also what wa your cpu score?

edit: here is a screen shot of one of my scores overclocked in 3dmark06

the clock speeds are basicly the same at stock and the benchmarks between the two doesnt show to much of a diffence. the 7600gs also doesnt offer much ocing on stock cooling. I currently run one and also thought the same thing but after i did some research i relized that the 6600 and 6800 are not much different from the 7600gs aside from the price

IMO you are very CPU limited. I went from a highly clocked 6800GS 534/1250 to a 7900GT @550/1750 and I saw only a slight increase in gaming with my P4 630@4000Mhz. My 05'/06' scores jumped about 2000 points per bench. My 01' score was changed the least because it is the most CPU dependent 3Dmark. I went dual core and my CPU scores better than doubled and overall scores jumped. Anyway your scores scores should be WAY better and your gaming experience should crazy better. Try OCing your CPU and see if you get a better responce from your card it's alot more powerful than your 6600GT.

Just to give you an idea my CPU scores in 06' were 1175-1180. And I was very CPU limited.
