I recently purchased a 15" macbook pro for college and now i finally got a written assignment and realized i have no word processor. I downloaded openoffice and it told me i need apple X11 to run it. I went to the apple website and it told me i needed to pay to upgrade to tiger or something to get it. Is xfree not free? Should i not be able to download apple x11 for free somewhere? Where can i get apple X11 and how do i install it?

If you have a macbook 15" (with an intel CPU), you are already running OSX Tiger.
What you saw was "OSX server", the server version of your OS. What you need is X11 aka X, a different kind of software: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/x11formacosx.html

However Mac users really dislike the OpenOffice vresion which depends on X11: doesn't integrate into the OS at all.
