View Full Version : blue screens
I recently made the move to high speed(dsl) from dial up.My pc has been rock solid for a long time now(run sys mech 6,firewall,update virus etc etc)but after putting the sbcyahoo disc into my system it became totally screwed, started getting blue screens all the time unstable etc.To make a long story longer I reinstalled windows and now everything is fine except for one thing whenever I try to download large files like battlefield beta(1.3g) I get blue screened with these stop codes:0x000000f4(0x00000003,0x894ca6f0,0x894ca864, 0x805c7478),everything works fine offline no blues or anything ,online videos, small downloads, cruising all day-no sweat, large downloads impossiblle?Any enlightenment would be appreciated.

Or maybe try another NIC. Put a PCI network card in your PC and use it for downloading. If the error disappears it's your NIC/NIC driver.
BTW: STOP 0x00000F4 means a critical system process has been terminated. Could be a lot of things doing that.
I just tried downloading the same file 1.3g and I started stopping the download every 300 or so megs and got all the way to 1.13g and just as I said wow it happened again but thats alot further than it would have got if I just left it.After installing windows I didnt go near that sbc disc and instead just used the xp setup. The thing I cant figure out is anything else gaming, surfing or video will run all day no problems but try downloading big files s**** right out? What makes it even better is calling sbc(Ive spent hours going from tier to tier of support)because they say oh its an operating system error. One tech guy even said it was a "coincidence" that the errors and the sbc disc happened at the same time(I had told him that my pc was stable before putting the sbc disc in).Im guessing maybe theres some setting Im missing thats possibly not handling the large downloads?

Unlikely. Since you haven't installed anything from SBC this time around, it's either a coincidence or you had flaky hardware all along (e.g. your now used network card)
The network card is a linksys(lne100tx v4),I got it from my sister and think it hasent been used before. If it was something wrong shouldnt be hapening all the time the only time I get the errors is when I try downloading big files on everything else never.I can play fear combat for hours with no problem.the same with video or surfing. The reason I thought it might be a setting or something like that is if I break the download up 300megs then pause,it seems to work better outside of the problem previously mentioned. That same download if just left alone would have got about 400megs and blue screen but by pausing it every 300 it got all the way to 1.13g.

You could use the event viewer to help narrow it down.
There is two ways to get to it.
The first and easy way.
Start | Run
Type in eventvwr.msc then hit enter.
Or ..
Right click My Computer | Manage | System Tools | Event Viewer
The key is to try and look for the times it happed or happens. Then you can narrow it down. To be able to copy the log files to a selected point. Like in here..
You will see in each event as you 2x click them. What looks like two sheet of paper kind of. They are greyish. That is how to copy to the clipboard.
I would first look to the Application part, then the System, if nothing seems like it fits.
SBC installs alot of software. Something can be giving you grief. The program used to be marked well with a Y in front of any named parts of the app. After the AT&T take over and the rebranding, I am unsure. It may help you greatly narrow it down. If it was a really bad stop, it will nto be able to write to the log.
Here is a very common error I get
Event Type: Warning
Event Source: Userenv
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1517
Date: 9/9/2006
Time: 4:25:44 PM
User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Computer: MONEYSPONGE
Description:
Windows saved user MONEYSPONGE\MiBo registry while an application or service was still using the registry during log off. The memory used by the user's registry has not been freed. The registry will be unloaded when it is no longer in use.
This is often caused by services running as a user account, try configuring the services to run in either the LocalService or NetworkService account.
If I did not know that I disable services and turn them on manually I would assume there was an issue. So if you think about what is going on during that time the error (usually red_) or the warning ( usually yellow) you can understand what your computer is grumbling about. You just have to play it by ear, which is chaff and what is user gold.
Hope this helps a bit. :D
Thanks for the info, that will help me narrow it down some as I can see there is some errors in it.Heres a couple:
atihotkey poller terminated unexpectedlly
lost the lease to ip address xxxxx on network card xxxx
the semaphore timeout period expired
tcp\ip has reached the security limit on concurrent attempts
Im hoping I can find some sort of magic bullet to fix this problem because not being able to get large files sucks b****,and Im not reinstalling windows or anything like that again.thanks for the info

You can fix the connection limit with a patcher. It is a simple way of increasing the number of concurrent connections. MS limited the amount to stop viruses from spreading quickly. So you have to make a decision if it is right for you or not. I use it and no issues for me. If for some reason I had a virus, my connection would quickly spread it. Since I am not limited like MS intends.
Here is the link to the file download page.

Here is the page for all the of the patches. Worth the browse. :D

It is easy to install, though if you need help chime in and I can help you out. Word of advice. Do not set thee limit to high. If you do use the patch. I use 100, but I have experience and tested it over a long period of time. I think most can get by with 50 pretty easy.
First you have to let it change the limit.. That is a yes. yes allows it, no will not do anything for you.. good for checking how it works. C will give you the ability to reset the limits to your desired values. Pretty straight forward/
The File protection will happen right after that. Cancel that..
Then it will ask about overwriting the file and such.. Yeah you want to replace the file. So choose yes.
The rest is all on screen and well thought out, so it should be pretty easy

try looking for new firmware and drivers for your card on linksys.com ...
have you ran memtest ?? and for what duration ?
whats antivirus are you using ?? internet security ??
Thanks for the info about the patch. When I looked in the event viewer I had a bunch of the 4226 error codes.Im gonna try the patch later today and hopefully itll solve the problem.

If the patcher does not work. You will need to look at the NiC as the issue. The Semaphore timeout is related to driver issues.
It could of be the OS is limiting how many things could be accessed by the card driver and making it grumpy. So if you still have issues, you are closer to narrowing it down to what is wrong.
First thanks again for the info because I spent alot of hours talking to tech help and not a single one could give me any input at all.Ill have to wait and see what happens next time I try to download a big fat file.Hopefully its better, theres not many things that get my blood hot but going from dial up to dsl than not getting to download things sucks. Thanks again
