Can someone point me in the right direction?
I just put together a new system and i want to change the hsf.
I have a athlon 1800 and i oc'd it to 1.69 but after playing a game for about a half hour it rebooted on me. the temp climbed to 43c
from 38c. do you think heat was the problem? I have 5 case fans
4 blowing in 1 sucking out with the ps fan. Any ideas?

My buddy has a similar system with a Volcano 6cu.

I am sure others will have other suggestions, but that one works for him...

43 isn't hot enough to cause a shut down if everything is working properly. I'm waiting for my new heatsink to arrive and in the interim my heat is up around 52 degrees 24/7. I'm not suggesting you run your system as hot as mine, but 43 shouldn't be causing a shutdown.

As for heatsinks...

I think the most popular right now is the SK6. The highest performing are one by swiftech and the alpha PAL8045. There are a ton of very good heatsinks out there. WHich one you choose depends on your wallet and exactly what you want out of the sink. I'd take a look at the most recent roundup at Anandtech for a good review. Dansdata also has a good bunch of data and a more down to earth presentation. He also covers a much broader range of heatsinks.

No, 43C isn't hot enough to warrant errors. That's well within safe operating temperatures.

My suggestion would be to up the core voltage by 0.5v incriments until you find a stable setting (Test thuroughly with each setting).

You may also want to download Motherboard Monitor 5 so you can check your 3.3v, 5v and 12v supplies, low or high voltages can cause errors.

Wega!

How is your +5V acting full load vs. idle?
I have the same problem. My CPU only reaches 45C, but it reboots after around half an hour of play. I think I know what the problem is, my +5V is only 4.56V at full load. Maybe that's what causing troubles for you too....

also is there another way to change my cpu core temps? my bios only lets me change in .25 increments i also increased my memory .20

You should also have as much air coming into the case as being exhasted. YOU HAVE 4 IN 1 OUT, yOU SHOULD have at least 2 out in your setup.

where should i put the other exhaust? i have 2 fans on the side panel to in the front and 1 exhaust in the back.
should i cut a hole in the top?
does the ps count as an exhaust?

The ps counts as an exhaust (if the fan is turned that way). A balance between the total "in" CFM and total "out" CFM helps all of the fans perform at their best which yields max throughput (in and out) and thus better cooling. I'm building my first system and I'm planning on using my ps as an input along with my rear fan. My two exhaust fans will be the hs fan and the one in the front. And I plan on ducting the hs fan to a side panel vent. Probably would be better to get more input before cutting that hole.
