Okay I just put together my system right as I am typing this. Its an unlocked amd 1800. I have a shuttle ak31 Revision 3 mobo that its in with an sk6 heatsink on top of the cpu. I just started it up for the first time and it shows the proc at 850mhz. So I said wtf and rebooted it, then it came up as 1100 by itself. The bios has it at 8.0x100 which is the default I assume, also at 1.75 volts. What could the problem be here, it should be 1.53 mhz not 850 nor 1100. What should I look at first.

Oops, check you unlocking connectons...

BTW, an unlocked XP deserver better than a shuttle...

I would mess up the unlocking so I bought a pre-unlocked one and even if the connections were not right, I would still have at least 1.533, am I not right?

The overclockerz store. It says amd 1800 on the proc, I got the right thing, just kinda new to this. Any suggestions anyone? BTW ITS AT 8.5X100 IN THE BIOS, WHICH IS DEFAULT IN MOST CASES RIGHT?

okay this is getting weirder and weirder. I wasnt using a good floppy cable so I switched it out, turned it on and now its at 100x13.0, by itself, I didnt change the value, is this normal?

Have you tried to reset the cmos. Does your bios support the XP's? If not just update your bios. Hope this helps.

They claim it does support them, also I did reset the bios with the jumper as well as in the bios with keys.

This is very strange, all I have in the machine right now is the cpu, the mobo, the vid card, the ram (2x256mb crucial pc2100), a floppy, hard drive and cdrom. It will have either 850mhz (100x8.5), 1100 mhz (100x11), or 1400mhz (100x14). I dont get why it is flying around like this. I have set the bios to defaults with jumper and in the menu. Plz, someone help me out here.

Sorry, so you cannot set you bios to boot off of a diskette?

That is serious...

Have you tried a new boot disk, dloaded from the 'net. That has worked for me...

Okay, I used the bios update and it recognizes my chip as amd 1700+ 95% of the time and 1800 like its supposed to, 5% of the time. Its kinda frustrating, must be the mobo I am thinking. Also after trying to install winxp prof final like 20 times, it has a memory dump half way through and quits. I was able to install windows 98. When I tried to install winxp I had nothing but video card in there, nothing extra. I am hoping it was just the cd or something stupid. This install is becoming very frustrating. Have reset cmos many times with the jumper, have tried a different hard drive, switched the ram slots, reseated the proc and lots more. Any more suggestions light of another mobo?

well it is possible that you got a bad mobo right off the bat.. if you baught it local, take it back for an exchange. I went through 2 before giving up and getting the a7v266
