The X1900XTX consumes about 60w more than the X800Pro at full load, maybe up to 80w more if you overclock.

This system (very similar to yours, but hungrier):
Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe
AMD Athlon FX 55
2 x 1 GB Corsair XMS 3200
Western Digital Raptor 74 GB
X1900XTX

Consumes 302w at full load (Prime95 + 3DMark05). Source here:

Are you really sure you need a new PSU? If you decide to upgrade anyway (I would suggest trying your current PSU first) then steer away from Thermaltake. Their products are flashy, and that's about it.

When you are ready to swap out the cards, uninstall all of your drivers before shutting down. When you reboot, enter into safe mode and use DriverCleaner PE to remove all ATi files. Then boot into regular Windows and install your drivers.

but on the system specs in newegg it says minimum 450w psu and as u can tell i have a 420w wich is a year old. also on the way is a AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ Toledo 2.4GHz. i just dont wanna damage any hardware if my psu goes puff! because i dont have enough juice. i already spent alot of $$$ :santa:

you should have got a better PSU before the other stuff

thermaltake make crappy PSU's

+12V1@14A, +12V2@15A that is pretty meager

expect to spend $85 and up on a quality PSU for a rig liek yours

Thermaltake does make pretty spotty PSUs, and that would be my main concern. An upgrade wouldn't hurt.

The OCZ Powerstream 520w is a solid unit. You also can't go wrong with anything by Fortron, Seasonic, PC Power and Cooling (expensive), or Zippy. Here's probably the least expensive of your good options:

I'd trade half an amp on each 12v rail for the peace of mind with a Fortron PSU. Besides, the X1900XTX will only pull 10A off the 12v rail - it won't need 17.5A or 18A. I mean, it's really up to the OP, and both are good choices. I think Fortron just has a better reputation.

Yes, uninstall your current drivers before putting in the card. Then after booting up with the new card, install new drivers. :)

Not all their PSU's are bad. Their Toughpower line is very good.

Because Windows is detecting new hardware and wants to install a driver for it. :)

Did you just install the X1900?

Are the drivers for the video card or for something else? Open up device manager and see what doesn't have a driver.

Another option power wise is to go for a dedicated video power supply like this one reviewed by BigBruin - http://www.bigbruin.com/2006/powerexpress_5

For $50 it got pretty good reviews and would avoid the need to order a new full system power supply.

i fixed my problem above by installing 6.7 ati drivers.

im getting my x2 4800+ and my card tomorrow. i really wanna test my new stuff
but i dont know if i should (with my psu bein 420w) im kinda scared of putting my card in :p. here is what i have let me know if i should go for it. i prolly order my new psu next week. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817153006
i know is a 20pin but it came with an adapter to make it 24 pin
i think there is a 6pin connector i dont remember. do guys use the connector that comes with the card or directly from the psu?

I get the same problem with the Omega 6.7 drivers...they seem to lack the WDM drivers or something like that. This is using my x1900xt btw.

I wouldn't be surprised if that setup kills that PSU. With dual core and a x1900, I'd opt for a 500W unit (at least).

I would be very surprised if it "killed" the PSU. Might cause it to reach maximum load and trip, but "kill" it it wouldn't. Just like what happens when one of the lines is accidentally shorted to ground.

Given that you have a total of 18a on the 12v rail and that the card will suck 10a of that at full load...I would wait for your new unit.
