So I am almost done with my wc'd conroe rig and was thinking about crunching numbers for SETI when I ran into the folding project and it sounds like a more interesting deal. Anyhow, my question is that is the folding software set so the priority of the process is the lowest so that it only runs in unused cycles? If im folding and then run some cpu intensive software that it shouldnt affect the process at all?

That is correct. The client will back off when something else requires cpu cycles. The client wont give up ram though. Right now there arent wu's that require lots of ram, but there were some in the past that would use 300mb. Your conroe will pwn folding. Welcome to the team. There are lots of us who will gladly help you get it all setup.

The folding software has no issues in giving up processor cycles when needed else where, but i do believe it will not release the ram it's using until it's shut down.
Other's more knowledgeable in this matter will be along shortly.
Hope you decide to join Team32 !!
Fold on !!
Edit: dwschoon beat me :)
You should have no problems running any applications with folding running also. You may want to have 2GB of RAM if you run two instances of the "big" work units.
I usually shut down folding when I play games though, but thats the only time.
Welcome to the team, be sure to browse the stickys :)

I've been trying to go through the stickies but didnt really see anything specific about cpu usage, just vague references to how it actually works. Right now I have 2gb of ddr2-800 so I dont think I will need to worry about it eating up my ram.

There is, in the config file, where it asks how much of the CPU you want to use.
default is 100%, since it is summer here in Arizona, I have mine set down to 90 - 95 % to help reduce the heat it produces (just a little).
I have the wifes pc set to 80-ish %, so it respondes quicker to "her" commands. :rolleyes:

It has a priority of zero, so It will relinquish as many cycles as a program needs. Your processor will always be at 100% with FAH taking the cycles above whatever is needed by the rest of the system. If you run something that needs all the cpu cycles, FAH will give up all the cycles. With your ammount of ram, I would download wedo's "one click" installer for duallie with -advmethods. After you unzip it, open both client.cfg files with notepad and change "wedo" in username=wedo to what you want your username to be. Change bigpackets=no to yes, checkpoint=15 to 30, and local=*** to 0. This last setting just keeps track of how many wu's that particular install turns in. Here is what mine looks like.
[settings]
username=dwschoon
team=32
asknet=no
machineid=1
local=12
bigpackets=yes
[http]
active=no
host=localhost
port=8080
usereg=no
[clienttype]
type=1
[core]
priority=0
cpuusage=100
disableassembly=no
checkpoint=30
ignoredeadlines=no
[power]
battery=no
Make sure you only delete the characters that need to be replaced, and not any of the hard return characters. After you edit/save each client.cfg file, run the installer and you are done. It will create a service for each instance(FAH1 & FAH2) You can start/stop them at anytime by clicking start-run and typing services.msc. They will be in that list.
Just re-affirming what dwschwoon said about editing using NOTEPAD. If you don't use NOTEPAD then the changes will not be saved and WEDO will get all of your points :eek:and you will be wondering why you are not getting any credit for the wu you turned in.
Wedo has gotten many such points, some of mine included.:bang head
