I dunno bout you but I LOVE Baldur's Gate II in its D&D goodness. That game is huge, has a cool story and is verrrrry playable. There hasn't been any good console RPG's out for a very very long time, so no recommendations there :(
I won't even beg to differ on that. There have been several good RPG's, console wise:
FFIX
Shenmue
Breath of Fire
Skies of Arcadia
Just to name a few. But PC wise, I can't really argue that Baldurs Gate rocks. Just don't forget there are others.

I know it's about 5 years out of date but I really liked the AD&D Ravenloft game "Strahd's Posession". "Menzoberranzaan" was good too.

Wow. That does date you... Before my time.
And I'm not that young!

They were good games for their time. Have the two Dark Sun games too, the first one was great but the second gave me nothing but trouble. Not with the game content but the mechanics, it was one of the most unresponsive interfaces I ever had the misfortune of using!
I was hooked on Diablo II..
Eventually it got boring but.. it was really fun for a start.

My personal favs:
Fallout 1 and 2
Menzo - pick elf and go fighter/mage. You get elven chain=) Actually, a "3D" clickfest but I played it w/ someone else so it was fun.
DS: Wake of the Ravager - Fighter/mage/cleric half-elf owns all
Unlimited Adventures. There was a big game in this one. Looked like atari graphics but I love it.
On consoles:
Grandia for SS
Presently I can't find anything else that impresses me. IMO BG=Diablo w/ a great story. I got bored of click-fest tho'. I'm one of those old turn-based RPG players and can't stand real-time.
Chrono Cross for PlayStation. My all-time favourite.

Aaah. Can't disagree with that one. Working my way through it a second time. Kinda boring battles now, though. Even with the sea swallow, there's no challenge at all. I even kicked Radius's butt in the initial battle with him. That was interesting. :)

Actually, CC just ticks me off... it is a long and dry piece with no special feature that catches my eye and mind. in fact, i sold 2weeks after, for i could not stand no more.. anyway, i think Xenogears, OgreBattle, and Final Fantasy Tactics are what i call "Kick ass" games!
C'mon post RPG's for PC CD-Rom. The closest thing I have is Grim Fandango, I tried Dark Age of Camelot, but returned it promptly.

More agreeance (is that really a word???) from me. Though is FFT really a RPG?

FFVVII and VIII ARE available for the PC CD-ROM, and both kick assets from here to tomorrow (7 more than 8 imho). But anywho. Icewind Dales for more turn-based goodness (not a very strong story line, but the combat rocks), the Wheel of TIme (FPS but a good story line), and my favorite, System Shock 2 (I've heard 1 rocks too, but I haven't been able to lay my petty little hands on that one). If you like FPS and RPG's, you'll love SS2. The best of both worlds.

I've got to put in my vote for what I believe is the best RPG ever made....
PLANESCAPE TORMENT!!!
huge story, awesome characters, great graphics, !!6 CDs!! worth of RPG fun. Easily the best RPG I have ebver played- and I've played most of the games mentioned already. Be prepared for a LOT of reading with Torment, if you don't like reading Tormnet will suck for you. Otherwise, get it!!
Or get an SMS emulator and get a ROM for the original Phantasy Star, still excellent after all these years. The first real RPG, in my opinion.

I don't consider those recent releases. I liked FFIX, bout time they got off their fatasy-but-this-is-really-sci-fi kick.

Yeah, too bad the series will never be going back (at least in the forseeable future).

Are you that biker? I am just pondering... Man, that must be painful or even deadly!

where did you get that idea? depending on the system, most emulators aren't even illegal. Especially since Nintendo is 3 generations removed from the SNES and cannot possibly make any money off it anymore. Nintendo just doesn't care about emulating old systems anymore. ditto Sega SMS, T16, NEO*GEO, C64, VIC-20, and a dozen others I have on my computer right now.
It's when you start emulating things you should be buying that the law gets involved- if you can pay for a game, then you should pay for it. If the game system has been off sale for 3 years and the game for 5, I think you are safe. I never would have played Chrono Trigger if it weren't for emulation. (personally I thought it was a poor game, and the words "OgreBattle" still cause fits of laughter at my house-that game sucked)
Moreover, the emulators themselves aren't illegal in any way, shape, or form. It's the ROMS specifically that are illegal!
Well that's my little rant about emus. I still say that Planescape Torment was the best RPG ever. Special mention goes to Bard's Tale and Dragon Warrior for getting the ball rolling.:)

Man, the game is fun and immense! Ok, so maybe i spend over 1000 hours on it just to see all the possible ending is a little crazy, but you got to admitt, it has good plot alone with fun battle system. Numrous hidden treasures, characters, complicated job switching system..etc. the list just goes on and on..anyway, to me, it is one hell of the game, and if you don't like it, pleae don't say it in front of my face. I am not saying your opinion is wrong or what, cuz everyone has different opinion, anyway, it is your freedom to say that the game sucks and i respect that, but just don't say it when i am around.
