A few things have been mentioned in other threads, so I thought it would be nice if we could compile a list of things working/not working so far in RC1. (I only speak for 32bit, gave up on 64bit drivers for time being)
I hope to expand on this list ALOT this weekend.
* All software versions are current unless specified.

I've had problems with Avast. The new beta fixes it though, and that can be found here (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=23424.0)

steam worked better for me in vista for about 3 days and then all of a sudden everytime i tried to launch a game i got that stupid old "the game is currently unavailable" bull crap!
So far I haven't run into any problems with software, but I haven't installed all that much yet. One problem though. When I tried to shut down the other night, it froze up at the desktop. The taskbar was gone and all icons were gone (just that period after that and just before the spash screen with the "shutting down" message.)
I had to reset and then shut down again. No errors given or anything, so that was weird.
Working
AVG
LimeWire
Firefox
Quicktime
Winamp
Something I was very happy about was drivers. Every driver worked properly right away. My audio drivers didn't install at first, but windows update provided them within minutes after installing. I was especially happy that my wireless card driver was available, I was worried about that. I got the 32 bit version BTW, though I may try the 64 bit one just to see how that goes.

Since all versions of Nero are a no-go, what software will burn an ISO image on Vista?
Windows will burn copies of files but not a bootable ISO image TTBOMK.

I'd try PowerISO v3.3. It's a pretty decent program and it's declared working in the original post.

I think he is refering to how poor of a program Steam is and how many errors and things it always encounters.

NO DAEMON TOOLS...BAD!
Seriously...what is their problem. Why not just let the program go and see if it works with Vista - rather than putting an error message in when someone tries to install it saying it's not supported. Let MS work out their bugs.

I couldn't get it to finish registering the components and it kept dying during the installation phase. With or without the compatibility switch.

Big update needed on this thread. I spent a large part of my weekend with Vista blue screens on boot. Again, this may be part of MB/Chipset/Etc drivers. Don't know.
Problem was with the media sharing. I have used Media Player 11 for a couple of weeks now with no problems. The other day it decided to detect my 360 as a medai pc. Ok, so I click on the bubble and set it up. Cool, it loads just like media edition on the pc. Reboot, blue screen. Safe mode still boots.
Turns out, with media sharing enabled in the OS, everytime I was running MP it was adding c:\program files\windows media player\wmpncfg.exe to my startup. If I removed it via msconfig etc it would boot fine, but appear again after running MP. I believe this only happened after it detected my other media devices and started trying to share.

Vista boots just fine for me but it takes a long long time to load.
XP seems so much faster you'd think it was DOS loading up in comparison :p
I'm taking a Vista vacation while I'm setting up my fresh XP install.
XP's installer sux while the Vista installer is very polished.
Update: Raxio has a new Vista beta version of it's Perfectdisk 8 up for a free 30 day trial. I'll let you all know how it works.
Latest Update: Perfectdisk 8 for Vista beta actually works on Vista. I just did an off line boot system file defrag and now I'm doing a smart placement defrag. Nice bonus is that the trial period is 150 days instead of the normal 30 days.
Hmmm... I wonder if this will install on XP? Once the XP Perfect disk expires, I'll try the Vista one LOL.

I agree the Vista installer is very automated justl ike 3 setting you have change.
Ps. trend micro has a free beta PC-cillin version 14.56 for Vista that works pretty good.

i must say... this is running soo slow compared to xp. i would not reccomend this for older computers. i even tried turning everything i could off and it still is slow...

09-19-06, 09:56 PM
Well, didnt the min requirements for Vista double that of XP? Pretty much anything under 1GHz is too slow for minimum Vista settings. I wouldn't touch Vista with less than 512mb of ram.

clockgen works (have to run it as admin in the options) not sure if u have to do the compability thing too
Oblivion Works
CCleaner Works
Foobar Works
Itunes Works
Gaim Works
I'm using Vista X64
Doesn't work:
NOD32
Works:
Avast Anti-Virus
Ventrilo
X-Fire
FireFox
Deer Park 1.6
Logitech Setpoint Drivers/Configuration
Thats all that I didn't see already. Are you going to seperate x86 and x64?
I gave up on Vista once it constantly started crashing with this error sys32k.sys. So I installed windows xp and windows vista trasformation pack. I liked gui from vista.

i get sys32k.sys error when oc too high on xp. vista seems pretty stable at this point. only issue i have is that i can't install the printer drivers for my printer. thats why im still on xp otherwise i would have moved on to get used to the new os. btw is there a way to disable windows defender, or at least stop it from asking u for permission every time you run something.

vista_5728.16387.060917-1430_x86fre_client-LRMCFRE_EN_DVD.iso
I got a link to a good Bittorrent and it should be finished tomorrow.
Once I confirm the md5 checksum, I'll burn the iso.

supposedly the size requirements for that build are lower. The ISO itself is smaller too. I might download it, but on this college connection it could take no lie a week.

Open 'Security Center', go to 'Other Security Settings', the turn off 'User Account Control'
That will get rid of all those stupid pop-ups asking for permission to do things.

speaking of compatability
anyone with my board in sig get vista to take the raid drivers when trying a fresh install.
i wanna try the newest version but I dont wanna wipe xp pro just to find out i can use raid 0 in vista.
Audioaficionado
09-24-06, 07:04 PM
Is it possible to get two spare drives you can set up RAID 0 ?
That's about the only way you could test it out yourself without losing your tweaked XP installation. I know I would be reluctant to do this for a beta OS too and I'm only running single drives for the OS partitions. My RAID mirror array is for data only so hopefully it will be above the fray when playing with OS installations.
Hopefully some one else will bite the bullet and give it a whirl.
yeah I was actually thinking of ordering 2 more perp drives...

I have a Gateway 6425 laptop with
Turion 64 bit 1.8 Ghz proc
1 gig ram
5400 HD
ATI200 graphics
It gives me a rating of 2 out of 5 because of the low powered graphics card.
Seems to take a little longer to load but the performance is perfectly tolerable.
The existing audio drivers don't work but Gateway said new ones will be available soon.
I'm fairly impressed with Vista so far. I have'nt had one problem.
