View Full Version : Should I step down?

I'm currently at 3439mhz on my E6400 on GA-965P-DQ6 mobo at 1.42V.
My NB temp is 43 C, and my cpu temp under full load is 61 C.
I take a feel at the air comming out of my power supply AND ITS HOT. It's like a heater. I also touched my RAM modules (oced my 30mhz) and they are burning hot.
If I run TAT for a while, it will start throttling however its stable around 69 C (TAT) and 60C (speed fan).
I use this machine for video editing, web application development, adobe photoshop, university work and it's pretty important to me.
Should I go back to stock settings?

Umm, how about improving airflow or backing off the oc just a bit, instead of either keeping it where it is or going stock?
You've got a lot of room to play with...Since your psu exhaust and ram modules are hot, my first order of business would be to clean up cables and get inventive with ways to direct flow across your ram and to help your psu stay cool. Do you have other enhausts besides your psu?

The case is very neat.
Currently theres only 2 exhausts fans. The powersupply only has 1 fan...it intakes from the case..and it's components are passively cooled and it spits out REALLY hot exhaust air from the rear. The second exhaust fan spits out cool air.
Theres another exhaust on top. Theres 2 intakes in the front and 1 intake in the side panel.
I cant improve case temps much.
Should I stick with this OC or not? I can hear some weird "noise" from my mobo sometimes...dont know if its the heatpipes or not.

what kinda ram u using... my gskill DDR2 800 even ocd 25% doesnt get hot at all... and flow across my mobo is nill cus i have a tower heatsink.... also what psu u using... some psus just run hot others dont....
in otherwords System specs would be nice (becides mobo and cpu)

Oh okee
System Specs:
Case: NZXT Lexa
PSU: NZXT PF500
Motherboard: GA-965P-DQ6
RAM: Patriot 2x 2 gig PC6400 DDR2
CPU: E6400 2.13ghz @ 3.4ghz
Soundcard: XFI
Cooling on CPU: Scythe Infinity with a 40 CFM quiet fan 100mm
Rear: "PSU Intakes and Exhausts hot air passively..." and 1 100mm 40 cfm exhaust fan. Also a small 80mm 30cfm fan on top exhausts.
Intake: 1 100m 40 CFM intake
Side Intake: 1 100mm 40cfm intake
oh btw...if I use TAT for load testing...my cpu throttles lol. For Orthos it doesnt throttle unless I select 3.6ghz.

100mm? Are you sure they arn't 120mm?
and 40Cfm? that seems low even for a quiet fan, you get get low dba fans that push near 80cfm with ease.
Sounds like you could use some fan recomendations from the cooling section, or do some searching.

Actually.....I went back to 3.2ghz. It's pretty cool now however theres an issue. My mobo sometimes makes a small noise under heavy load. Is it dangerous? Mobo temp is 41C.

btw.. I wouldn't trust any PSU that came with a case.
UL # on the PSU?
specs on the sticker?

that noise you are hearing you sure its not from the PSU giving out?

I should have stepped down =(
I just killed my XFI. It isn't being detected anymore evenon another PCI slot. Windows Rebooted many times beause in the BIOS device table..it shows 100 "Multimedia Audio Devices" sometimes when I'm overclocking and now..it died.

these bloody XFI sound card do strange things when im overclocking.
Sometimes when i boot the card doesnt have any drivers, so annoying....
I did a repair install of XP seemed to fix issues.

I've had the same issue happened once, I just reinstalled the x-fi's drivers.

This happened a couple of times...usually restarting would fix it...now its compeltly dead.

BTW, How could overclocking kill my XFI card???
I set the PCI lock at 100 even at stock...and case temp was around 41c..once or twice i upped the mobo voltage by 0.1+ volts.
Without my XFI....music doesnt even sound good. I can't even dance to madonna anymore!

if you are talking about pci bus speed its spec is 33mhz the highest with out problems i have heard of is 38mhz. I get the feeling you are refereing to PCI-E bus speed in which case runs at 100 some have set it to run as high as 125mhz.
well some reasons why pci cards dont like ocing, the pci bus speed is way out of spec. With these newer boards i dont see how that is possible since they auto lock to 33mhz.

Get a DMM and check the rails on the PSU. I would not trust that thing for a second.

The rails seem fine...HOWEVER..earlier that day
I swapped my NZXT PF500 PSU for a ThermalTake 430 PSU....after a while I swapped it back to my original PF500 PSU. I was overclocking with the TT as well....and the problems started after I used the TT.
So infact...TT PSU might have "killed" my XFI. Someone here recommended that I dont swap my PF500 for a TT but I did anyway and I guess I paid the price lol.
The rails on my NZXT PF500 on STOCK is
Vcore: 1.23V
Vcore2: 1.87V
+3.3V: 3.36V
+5V: 5.00V
12V: 0.90V
-12V: -16.97V
-5V: -5.26
+5V: 5.05V
VBat: 3.30V
Also while I was oced....I flashed the BIOS to F5D beta....which alot of people who had the XFI had a problem with. I flashed back to F4 and XFI is still dead...confirmed on another comp.
What happens is when I connect the XFI...both computer's BIOS detects "100" Multimedia Audio devices...as soon as Windows load..it blue screens because..the bios has 100 nonexistant multimedia audio devices.

so the .9v on the 12v rail doesnt strike you as low?
never heard of that psu, it is given that psu's included with cases are cheap. One excecption is the antec cases which have solid psu's.

Rails seem pretty off. I use a 560watt Silverstone and it doesn't get hot. The exhaust air is barely warm. I think you need a better fan on your HS. Change out your PSU if those are your true rails. Definitely test with a DMM if you have one.

Woah wtf?
+12V is 0.83V....is that good or bat?
I noticed "-12V: -16.97"...
I HATE swapping out my PSU...cause I have to remove the whole motherboard because my Scythe Infinity is blocking the PSU removal side.

The most important rail for us overclockers is your 12V one
It has to be 12V or over, mine runs at 12.24 because i use a Powerstream and make sure it always above 12V
Anything under 12V will cause a huge range of issues.
YOU NEED A BETTER PSU, i highly recomend the OCZ powerstream 520W, or a silverstone 560W.
YOur XFI card probably isn't dead, you've just messed up your drivers and XP, i suggest you do a clean install of XP or a repair install, try removing all XFI drivers and reinstalling not just moving it around different PCI slots.

I tried it in a completely new computer (my brothers) and it started giving me blue screens because it's bios also detected 100 multimedia audio controllers like mine.
I dont think software readings of the PSU rails is accurate....ill try to see if i can get a DMM
