I've been contemplating trying mandrake..
I'm dling the ISO's now, (3 of em??)
was gonna have ME one drive, XP/mandrake 8.1 other...

but I'm worried about compatibility..
I didn't see ATI radeon DDR listed...
so does that mean no GUI for me?

should be some basic drivers in the install,
at least for 2d { gui }
but there are some decent 3d drivers floating around on the web,
you'll just have to look for em.

For starters, you don't need all the isos. The first one is the core install, the second one is extra junk, and the third one is the sourcecode for it all.

Mandrake will have 2D drivers for your Radeon out of the box, but 3D will take some work. You will need to take a look at the DRI Project (http://dri.sourceforge.net), they are the one handling 3D for your card.

nice... well that saves 1 ISO worth of space..

dunno what 'extra stuff' is..
but dling @22 k/s...
strangely if I open and connect 3 clients, they still d/; @ 22 k/s..

must be bandwidth capped on their side :(

Well, if you are new to Linux, then the extra stuff is probably stuff that won't hurt your experience at all if you don't even know about it.

I don't have a list, but its the stuff that was deemed absolutely less important than whats on the first disc. Otherwise, it'd have been on the first disc.

I hope you are not using a download client for getting those ISO images. You can but you must make sure you are downloading from ONE site only! Not all images are the same even though they say they are. Trust me, I've never gotten an ISO downloaded from multiple sites to work.
