I just put together my new conroe system with watercooling, and these pics are what I see when I start her up. Anybody ever seen this before? I hope to god my 7900gtx is not dead.

Try another video card?... Because I do have a feeling that either your card is dead.. or you have a bad PCI E slot.

Tomorrow I'm going to hit up Best Buy for a cheap pci-e card and see, but I dont know how I could have screwed the card up. Does a bad pci-e slot look like this? You can still see words on the screen, too...

My old ATI 8800 made that when it totally fried on me due to... the heatsink falling off...

Whenever the PCIe slot is messed, you rarely get any more then a blank screen unless you have an even bigger problem...

So I put the card in the previous system, and I got the same results. So now I face the dilemna, do I get a new 7900gtx, or get a crappy interim card and wait a few months for the g80? That XFX card I fried was only like 6 months old.

Did you plug in the power to the card?

yeah, its got power. Even without the power connected I think these cards still at least show a proper boot screen. The only thing different than when the card was working properly, is now it has a DD-Koosah waterblock on it instead of the Zalman cooler.

Sounds like you crushed it then. I would say try to remount it - but if you threw it in another system and it didn't work then it's toast.

that sucks man .. sorry to hear that .. may it rest in peace ..

did you by chance check the voltages on it ??

I havent checked voltages. I did remount it after the initial failure and the die showed only a small spreading of the as5, so maybe I didnt have good enough contact? Its so hard to tell when putting those waterblocks on because they're not spring loaded like the cpu waterblocks. I put the block back on the 2nd time and made sure to tighten it more, but I have not removed it yet to check to see if its actually crushed now. If it is crushed, can you tell visibly?

I think yes, you should be able to see if its crushed. But I am 99.99% sure that it is now dead.

I've seen such screen just recently on a customers PC. His card was a cheapo MX440, but it was tested to be completely dead. PCI-Express cards can even work when some contacts aren't physically connected so I doubt it's the PCI-E port.

I'll take pics tonite and post them once I get the block off

yep.... had the same thing happen to me with my BFG 6800GT... only I tried to be extreme and tried mounting an ols S478 HS on the core with chopped up all Socket A HS for the ram... ended up craking the core because I over tightened thee mounting screws because I didn't think it would make good contact if not tighend all the way..... DOH!!! and my screen looked just like yours does... except mine made horizontal lines ;) So I'm sorry to say buddy, but shes dead :( RIP

Sorry to hear about your card bro. I myself am currently going through an RMA on a 7900GT EE, so I feel your pain.

I've got a 7950gt coming to me to replace this card. Hopefully I won't screw this one up too...

Well I got the 7950gt up and running on the new build. Just for fun, here's the new 3dmark05 score: 10115. Thats an increase from the 9890 I had with the system in my signature that I just upgraded, even with a lesser vid card. New specs:

2.66ghz Core 2 Duo
DFI Infinity 975X
2gig Corsair XMS2-6400
BFG 7950gt
2x74g Raptors Raid0

I have not put the waterblock onto the video card yet, because I am still in shock over the last card's fry.

Try spreading the AS5 around so there is a thin film over all the top of each RAM and the GPU. When I install my DD waterblock that is what I do and it works fine. Then you dont risk not having good coverage and killing your card.
