I downloaded the x64 bit version, burned it to a DVD, and tried to reboot and install. I get through the screen that says "windows files loading......" and the bar fills up, but when it tries to go to the next part, it seems to crash, it just so faintly shows the text that says 2006 windows etc etc and it hangs right there with that very dim piece of text
system is e6600 on P5W DH, 1gig memory, 7800GT, 2 sata HD's in raid 0
Any idea's? i've tried all sorts of bios settings. loaded defaults, even tried another CPU. I went back to the website and downloaded the x86 bit version and it did the exact same thing.

sounds like a bad burn to me. Try lowering the burn rate to say 8x if 16x

Try mounting the vista image with daemon tools from within xp, and starting the install from there. In that way you don't need a burned copy at all.

I tried burning at a slower speed. i've made actually 4 copies so far, and all produce the same results.
I can't run it from windows because the 64 bit installer isn't compatible with my 32 bit XP

I highly doubt that will work, especially since it's going to have to reboot, thus, that drive doesn't exist, thus the virtual cd doesn't exist, therefore the install will fail.

The fact that it locks up as it tries to display that graphical screen, i might try a different vid card, or update the vid card bios. Has anybody installed vista with a 7800GT yet?

I had the same result with the 64bit version, and I didnt have any luck on narrowing down why...I wonder if its just a bad image?
The 32bit version works flawlessly for me though...

try what i did -
install a fresh copy of Vista Beta2 x64
then after that installs, pop in the Vista RC1 x64 DVD and hit Upgrade
worked for me

If you have ram that is producing memory errors, it will prevent Vista from installing. To cross this problem off the list of potentials, run memtest86 and ensure that you are free of memory errors.

Yeah, i'm sure the mem is just fine. i run every day at ddr2-800 but i tried even all defaults and with the mem running at 1:1 @ 266 FSB same situation.
I realized the only other vid cards i have are AGP and one PCI that i don't know if it even works anymore.....

Just incase anybody's interested, i'm typing this reply now within Vista x64. I located the problem to my MSI theater pro 550 TV tuner card. I tried another TV tuner card and it prevents windows from loading.
Once the TV card was removed the installation went smooth as anything.
