I'm looking for a cheap, easy method to re3duce the noise of the cooling fans in my Duron system. it has 2 120 mm case fans in it and a Delta 38 screamer on a Vantec copper hs. Any suggestions? This sucker is loud, and if I don;t get it quiet soon, my wife will make me take the fans out, which means no o/c'ing....then I'll die. Just read my signature. ;)

If the Delta 38 is the problem, you might have a look at www.millisec.com . They and other etailers sell 60-to-80mm fan adaptors that let you use an 80mm fan in place of the Delta 38. The catch is: If you want the same cooling effectiveness as the Delta 38 cfm 60mm fan you need to use a 68cfm 80mm fan! These are as loud as the Delta, yet lower pitched and less annoying.
If you are using(and need) ~100 cfm 120mm's, the only way to keep the same airflow, yet have quieter case fans is to add two more 120mm holes. Then replace all the ~100 cfm 120mm fans with ~60cfm 120mm's.
You could put rubber grommets between the case fan bodies and the case covers, or a thinner cork gasket. This may be more difficult to do with CPU fans.
You could also throttle your delta back to 7v w/ a quick mod. Take your 3-4 pin adapter, clip and skin the big red wire, then clip and skin the small black wire, splice the red and black wires together. Instant 7v mod. What you're basically doing, is grounding 5v from 12v, so you get 7v (I think thats it)
Use a rheostat. I have one on my delta & it worked out great. You can turn it down to around 5500 rpm's & the noise won't drive you nuts & it still cools good. 41c full load, running folding@home 24/7. I'm using a FOP-38, with that cooper cooler you'll probaby get better results
I left the ground & RPM wire (yellow & black) attached to the motherboard header & split the red to the rheostat & then to one of the power supply connectors. This way I can adjust to the RPM's I want.
I also have 3 other fans conntected to a seperate rheostat.

I've got a rheostat on mine. Like it the best. Just roaming the net can turn the fan to low rpm, start gaming, crank it up. Heck can't hear it over the music anyway.
Cheapest easiest method is the 7volt mod. It won't cool as well, but it will be a lot quieter and should still cool sufficiently.
Next cheapest and easiest is to put the fan on a rheostat. This is actually preferable to the 7 volt mod because it lets you used the full power when you need it, but turn the fan down when you don't.
Finally, you can use a different fan. Here the options are legion. If you decide to go this route, let us know and we can make some detailed suggestions.

I took some Sonex foam to my case. I can't tell exactly how much difference it made, but I suspect at least 3-5 decibels. I got the stuff and the mod from 2cooltek @ http://www.2cooltek.com/case104_1.html. Something to mod at the very least which was fun in itself.

do 7v mod with your 120mm fans and your delta
or like everyone else said
duct a 80mm or 92mm or a 120mm

i've gotten used to the way that mine sounds. but on occasion i have thought of taking the rubber foam padding (kinda like used in some mattress covers) and gluing that inside if it got too bad. don't know how well that would do.

Well, if you really want to cut down on noise, then you can do what I did:
I purchased extension cable for my monitor, mouse, keyboard, and printer, and stuck my computer in a closet (making sure the ventilation was still ok!) My rig was loud as heck before, but now that its in the closet, I barely hear it! It can be a bit of a hassle to burn cds, but its only like 20 feet away, so its not that bad. You can get great prices for cable at Cableclub.com (http://www.Cableclub.com) . Make sure to get the KVM cable with the super VGA vid cable. Also make sure that you dont get male/male, or you will have to go find impossible to find and expensive female/female adapters!
