Hard drive going 3.6MB/s avg?

I tried a defragment and a full scan disk on one of my hard drives and then tested it with HD Tach and it averages at 3.6MB/s at maxes at 3.7MB/s, while in comparison another one of my hard drives averages at 47.7MB/s and maxes at 91MB/s. Is it safe to say the first one is pretty much dead, or is there another way to fix it?

And although there is a big sticky about RAID, I have a quick question. In say I put 2x 250GB IDE PATA hard drives in RAID0 would I have the full 500GB free space? And is it possible to set up a hardware IDE PATA RAID0 on a P4P800-E deluxe motherboard without any extra RAID controller?

what hdd are you using?, yes puting 2 250g in raid 0 will on paper b 500g but actualy be ~460g

My 36GB Raptor is the one averaging at 3.6MB/s. My motherboard has: Additional IDE Raid controller (Promise 20378 chip, 1 channel IDE supporting ATA33/66/100/133 & RAID 0, 1, 0+1, JBOD with support for up to 2 ATAPI-devices; 2 SerialATA channels); would I need any other equipment besides the standard IDE cables to set up a RAID 0? And how would I set my jumpers on each one of the hard drives? Thanks for your help.

If its reading that slow my first "guess" would be either bad cable or the drive itself has a horrible amount of bad sectors.
