What is the best way to cool a system on a limited budget?
No water cooling or things like that, way too complicated. I'm goin to overclock my athlon hopefully. I don't mind hacking holes in my case. Also, what is a good CPU temp, mine is 171 degrees F without puttin to much work on it or overclocking...
  :eh?:
thanx a lot...
171?!?!?!??! that is NOT a safe temp...are u positive this is what it is?
that = about 77C.....too high for even AMD specs
a good stable temp is at least in the 50s....(122F)
what sort of heatsink/fan are u using? and are you sure you secured it properly?

I'm using the manufacturer's heatsink&fan. One dy I rebooted, went into my bios, and got that temp readout.

what mb do you have? Do you have the latest BIOS? Those temps are extremely high. It's possible to run off of but i wouldn't recommend it. Did you put the hs/f on? To answer your question, get a good hs/f and get good airflow. Have a little more exhaust airflow than intake in your case. That way the ambient temp is cooler so the air the hs/f is blowing is cooler. Try getting motherboard monitor and seeing if you get the same temp read.
Also, you'll want to use a good quality thermal paste, like ASII, and scrape the thermal pad off.
