Hey guys I just got me a new Fx-60 and A8n32 mobo combo to upgrade from
my x2 3800+ and am now looking to upgrade in the video card department.
I am wanting a new video card that is able to run the new HD-DVD format for
when the HD-DVD drives come out.
So what card is going to do this??
I can already play HD video's or .ts video's from the net but I have been
reading around about HTCP needing to be decoded or some odd thing like
that in order to play the HD-DVD formats.
I kinda wanted to do what the guy in this video did and use that drive now
to play HD-DVD movie's on my pc but then I run into the HTCP thing.
Let me know what you guys think and for the mean time here is the video make sure to watch the whole
video-cool stuff.

Ok so I just got off the phone with BFG the maker of my video cards right!!
And I ask them the same questions and they told me its not the video card that has anything to do with decoding HD-DVD or Blu-Ray.
They tell me that its all application orientated Hummm are they clueless or what??
He tried telling me windows media player 11 and Nvidia pure video dvd will play HD-DVD's and Blu-Ray DVD's if I pop it into my drive.
Is this true??
As far as I know it takes a video card just to decode a normal dvd and is played on an application like power dvd or so on ect. ??
Plus as far as I know you also need a Proper Drive not a standard dvd rom LOL.
So whats the news cause I am getting ready to go get a HD-A1 and ripping out the HD-DVD PC ROM Drive And seeing if it play's.
I also heard a little rummor that HD-DVD's will only play in Vista and not in xp-sp2.

The HD-DVD XP/Vista rumour is true but some 3rd party will come out with an XP player so don't worry. The video card MFG is somewhat right, I can't speak for ATI because I don't know but all non TurboCache and onboard controller/laptop/motherboard NVIDIA 6xxx and 7xxx video cards have built in chips that help decode the HD video better than software alone thus taking some of the load off of your CPU. The next big thing in video cards and monitors is going to be eliminating the Analog VGA and Digital DVI ports and replacing them with HDMI. Combine this with the new video standard being DirectX 10 and it taking better advantage of HD than DX9 and I ultimately would suggest you buy a cheaper card such as a 128 or 256 bit (AVOID the 64bit) 6200, 6600 or 6800 Nvidia card as a holdover until the DX10 cards hit the market in which you'll need a new card and monitor to take full advatage of the HD features.

Thanks fudgenuggets Bout time someone that new what they were talking about answered me ;).
Yeah thats great news to be able to play HD-DVD's on xp cause I really dont want to have to upgrade to vista right now.
Perhaps later n the future after the bugs are all taken care of like maybe a sp2 version of vista will be do-able.
But for the mean time I will be sticking to what I got now.
By the way I Have 2 BFG 7800GT's so that should work for now right for hd content otherwise if not let me know now so I can go grab a set of 7950GT's they are going for only $280 at newegg.
As I have the cash now and may not later, you know how that goes!!
Thanks again man you were very helpful...

The guy at BFG was half right. The easiest thing to do is first read this Q&A http://enthusiast.hardocp.com/article.html?art=MTE2NiwxLCxoZW50aHVzaWFzdA== then post any more questions.

Damn it I knew it no 7800GT support only 7900GT and up.
Looks like I will be upgrading my video cards now too.:bang head
Anyways thanks very very much for this Link I have been looking for this
kinda info everywhere.
Really I have read atleast 200 sights searched off of google .
Gerrrr but its all good I will either just grab me a 7950-GT or 2 or get the new
G80 series cards which I have been planning anyways.
but untill they release those new HD drives one can dream right??

There's a bit of BS in that article... My 6200/softmodded 6600 can play H264, Windows HD and Quicktime-HD files just fine, so I think whoever was being interviewed has something screwed up or is just trying to sell more hardware. The HDMI factor for protected stuff, I mentioned earlier but the industry says they're not implementing the protection until 2010 if at all.
Don't believe me, watch some of these trailers and see that they work fine with your card

Also check out this High-Def hardware enhancing Nvidia Driver
info and decoder/driver:
You can try this for free for a bit but then have to register it, it's cheap so no worries:

Yeah this is pretty funny as I am able to watch those video's on my s754
sempron 2800+ Laptop with a Ati M200 128MB video card.
But I dont think this is the same thing as watching a HD-DVD as the new
video cards and cpu's need to decode Pure Video HD,HDR, and H.246 Ect..
As far as I understand it is only the 7900GT and up is able to play this stuff.
But then again like someone said before there will be a 3rd party HD-DVD win-
xp program that will allow you to play this stuff on current gen pc hardware.
I bet its like those 200 and 400 Mhz old school laptops that play dvds that I
see at flee markets for like 50 bucks all the time.
Anyways I am not to worried about that anymore as I just parted with my
Fx-60 and a8n32 mobo combo for $520.00 this after noon and plan to grab
me a nice shiney new E6600,E6700, or X6800 to future proof my self for this
very reason of wanting to play HD content.
Heck I may even wait a month or 2 and grab me a 65nm am2 if they can
compete with conroe.
I am not really a fanboy of either as I have had great stuff from both
companies at one time or another.
I am a fanboy of the next best and greatest thing but I think we all are am I
right??
Well if you guys find anything more please post it here I will be very greatfull.
