Okay before you get all homophobic let me explain:

I was at Eaton Centre in Toronto today and they were demoing the Wii at a booth. I got to watch for about 30 minutes and play for about 5. The only things they had going were Mario Galaxy (non-playable) and Wii Sports. I played Wii Sports Tennis for about 5-10 minutes against another person and found out 2 things. 1. It CAN be fun or it CAN be boring. The movements you put into the controller are motion sensitive but a slight flick of the wrist or a slow stoke of the forearm is all that is required to play. You don't actually have to swing the wii-mote's nunchuck like a real tennis racket. It IS more fun and LOOKS more spectacular if you do but standing stationary and flicking it with the wrist or producing a slight forearm stroke does the same thing. It's kind of like simply pounding on the right spots vs sychronized and choreographed moves on Dance Dance Revolution (sorry if you don't know what I'm talking about but it is hard to put into words). YOou just have to see these professional teams do DDR.

I think when people get ahold of the Wii for real it'll be 50/50 reaction. Those that can get passed the non PC/PS3/360 graphics and who actually jump around and move around with the controller will have an absolute ball an go bananas over it and love it, but those who are expecting Fary Cry graphics and stand stationary while flicking the wrists and the forearm will think it's a POS. You'll get out of it what you put into it. I think that for adults it will become the ultimate get drunk and party machine, but for the slovenly, unimaginative and those who are satisfied to sit there with keyboard and mouse in front of Half Life 2, America's Army, and those other FPS multilplayer games and not move for hours, they'll hate it.

Sounds cool, but i think its gameplay will make up for its graphics.

Redsteel just looks awesome. Like that game is worth owning a Wii for.

good unbias report fudge....I think thats the case with any control scheme...some people absolutely hate FPS's on consoles...and will only play with keyboard/mouse.....some people probably prefer the console gamepad on FPS...especially mroe casual gamers...your never going to have a control scheme that pleases everyone.

Sounds good. Unfortunately the news that you need only flick the wrists to emulate full movements is most depressing. Those fat couch potatoes aren't going to get any exercise when they work that out. :p

Well personally I want to play a game to relax. So if I had to jump around evergame or really even hold my arm up everygame I could grow to hate the system rather fast. It sounds though like I can just lay down and slightly move my hand, which is good news for me. Thanks for the review.

This is the first console I've wanted to play an FPS on since the N64.

Well I cant wait to get my Wii and the new zelda game.
I seen this jedi light saber test game that I would kill to get.
THat would be so cool to have light saber battles over the internet with some guy in tin buck too.
I hope there is more to just flicking the Wii controller I hope it is tilt sensitive.

Tilt sensitive?

It does have motion sensors that can tell when you are tilting it. Like when you hold it flat to steer a car straight and the tilt it right to turn right or left to turn left.

Or tilting for for parrying/blocking.

Yes it does. I wasn't trying to alarm anybody with the review, I'm just saying that if you're playing tennis, you CAN play the game with subtle movements of the wrist, hand and forearm, you don't have to swing the nunchuck like Andy Roddick or like you were REALLY playing tennis.

it has full range motion. if you want just tilt, get the ps3.

How does it sense the movements of the Wiimote?

I'm pretty sure it has a sensor that sits on top of your TV.

yep, it's got a little bar that's maybe 1"x5" that sits on top of or in front of the TV.

Reading is fundamental. Try reading the question I was answering.

ps Good explaination of how it works from Wiki:

"Sensing
The Wii Remote is able to sense movement and orientation. Sensors in the Wii Remote allow it to sense linear motion along three axes, as well as tilt.[4][10] The controller features an optical sensor, allowing it to determine where it is pointing. This can cause some detection problems when bright or fluorescent lights are in the area, requiring the controller be calibrated to a sensor bar which uses two sets of LEDs in each end of the bar as reference points for the Wii Remote. [6]

The sensor barThe sensor bar can be placed anywhere near the display screen and parallel to the screen's horizontal edge. It is not necessary to point directly at the sensor bar, but pointing away from the screen itself will disrupt position-sensing ability. The use of the sensor bar allows the Wii Remote to be used as an accurate pointing device up to 5 meters (approx. 15ft) away from the bar.[5] The sensor bar is about 20cm in length and features eight IR LEDs, with four LEDs being arranged at each end of the bar. [11] The Wii Remote contains a one-megapixel image sensor [12] which is used to locate the sensor bar's eight points of light in the Wii Remote's field of view. The known real-world dimensions of the spacing between the LEDs on the bar allows the Wii Remote to calculate its position and orientation in space relative to the bar. This information is in addition to, and supplemented by, the 3-axis acceleration and tilt sensors in the Wii Remote.

When the Wii Remote is pointing away from the sensor bar, the 3-axis acceleration/tilt sensors measure linear acceleration and rates of rotation which provide approximate values of the location and orientation of the Wii Remote, but these values gradually drift out of alignment as long as the image sensor is unable to image the sensor bar. When the Wii Remote is again pointing at the sensor bar, the location and rotation data from the Wii Remote image sensor automatically recalibrate the location and orientation of the Wii Remote.

The position and motion tracking of the Wii Remote allows the player to mimic actual game actions, such as swinging a sword or using a flashlight, instead of simply pushing buttons. An early marketing video showed actors miming actions such as fishing, cooking, drumming, conducting a string quartet, shooting a gun, sword fighting, and performing dental surgery.[13]

Despite the controller's similarity to a light gun, which is only compatible with cathode ray tube televisions, Nintendo has stated that Wii and its controller will be compatible with all televisions including digital projectors."

It depends.... If you play with friends a lot or have a vivid imagination and don't mind graphics that are between last and next gen plus like the Nintendo cast of characters then I say definately YES. If you can't answer yes to the majority of the above then I say no.

If you want to swing any version of a sword (katana [Red Steel], lightsaber [Star Wars], etc) and watch your enemies crumple under your sheer awesomeness, then yes.

If you want to use the PS3 knockoff, then no.

They should just release the old N64 games with better graphics, and it would be an instant hit, i'm sure.

Imagine playing Ocarina of Time with a real sword and awesome graphics...I can't even begin to explain to you how awesome that would be.

I respect Nintendo because they have the courage to do NEW things, unlike releasing better hardware for essentially the same system. Honestly, if Nintendo would just suck it up and work with 3rd party developers like rockstar, adopt the same features as other consoles, but at a cheaper price like I know they can achieve, they would be doing much better.

And come on, you can't tell me you wouldn't LOVE to hold a Desert Eagle sideways out your passenger side window while doing a driveby with a Wii controller in GTA.

Actually I can very much say I would not love to do a driveby in GTA with the Wiimote. Simply driving a car with that thing could be a real pain. I do agree though, those titles would of course be best sellers, if they simply put better graphics on those games with a basic controller they would be best sellers. I think you should give the others some credit too though. For instance the Eye Toy, or the PS2 having an HDD bay from the start and even had 3d goggles in design but never made it. Then you have things like Blu-Ray/HD-DVD which could almost ruin Sony yet they are taking a chance on a new product, HD-DVD won't kill Xbox but it's still nice that they added it.

Nintendo has said they are trying to get the best developers no matter what types of games they make, so who knows, we might get GTA for Wii.

The big N has been doing a lot better in that respect as of late. For the longest time, Nintendo just outright TOLD 3rd party developers that it was making games for their consoles. Then about halfway through the SNES' lifecycle, 3rd parties started saying 'No' when they were told.

It's taken a long time for Nintendo to shake off the old stigmas they have had with developers like Square (now SquareEnix). They've finally realized that 3rd party developers must be romanced into making games for their consoles. If they keep it up, they'll actually get quite a few onboard and start doing very well. If they give them developer versions of the consoles, all the documentation needed for coding of the games, and fair shares of profits, then they'll have done a complete 180 from what they were doing in the past.

I would also like to see them bring some 2nd parties onboard, too. They had that with Rare, before they sold them to Microsoft in what many would call an incredibly foolish move (myself included). Just find small dev studios with good ideas but not a lot of cashola or hardware, and purchase them. Give them the stuff they need to make games for them. It's what they originally did with Rareware, and it worked marvelously.

Only tards and actors (you can lump them all in the same catagory i guess) hold a gun like that. I guess thats how natural selection works though, heh. The tards get weeded out because they aren't smart enought to stay near the middle of the heard or because they don't know how to aim a weapon:p

Rap culture is going to be the down fall of our nation. Pretty soon all our kids will grow up to be soldiers and get the butts kicked because they hold their asault riffles upside down, dual wielding and firing from the hip :D

j/k I shouldn't bust your balls, i used to break dance and if thats not a candidate for natural selection I don't know what is, lol.

I havent bought a console since xbox first launched (sold it a few months later) but Id really been looking into getting a wii as mentioned the graphics arent going to revolutionize the industry but I cant help but be intrigued with the controller and how it works.

more importantly though I think it will be interesting when sony and microsoft come out with thier own spin on the action controllers and incorporate them into some graphic rich games as well.

in all honesty though the wii looks fun even with some of the games with incredibly simple graphics I can see some of the sports genre games really coming to life with the controller. I do think its a bit lame when you see the metroid commerical and the guys hiding behind the couch like hes in a laser tag arena or something maybe the next step is that games will come with a hit sensor vest that tells you if you got shot or not by the guys your figting on the screen. I also think 3rd party aftermarket controllers that actually look like a gun would go over big for some of the fps games but havent heard much about that to date.

When Wii goes down under $150 I'm probably going to buy it to play RedSteel and Zelda and some of the other GC games like RE series and Tale Symphonia.

I'm just very disappointed that they don't have HD support.

This kind of disappoints me cause i actually DO play tennis and i figured it would give me some kind of upper hand against my couch potato friends who do nothing but play video games all day but i guess not :bang head.
