Alright, sheesh, I've been talking about a new computer build. I am on a budget, however I've been thinking about forcing my wallet open a bit more for a better card, but I'm not sure if it's worth it, all I keep thinking about is that DX10 is coming out and my card will be rendered useless. My newest plan is to just buy the highest clocked 7600GT and just wait for the next line of cards to come out, but I am falling in love with the MSI 7900GT, but it just seems like a waste of money when I just know 2 months from now or whenever dx10 comes out and people are going to say my card is a peice of ****. Should I just go with 7600gt? Or is the 7900GT worth it, well I know it's worth it right now but gahh!! see? Meh!

Your cards will not be useless. The industry is not all of a sudden going to switch to DX10 and every card obsolete. You have to follow the money. Games for a while will still be DX9 compliant. I have heard that companies will issue two versions of games. Microsoft will be selling the new flight sim at dx9 and then coming out with a dx10 which it will have. Where ever the money thats where the companies will be. The money will not be in DX10 for a while.

Just buy a card now - whatever you want to spend.

It's pointless to wait for the next gen because the prices will be ridiculous - and you won't gain immediate advantage with a new card.

And at least take a look at the 7900GS, some in the for sale section, they are close to the 7600gt price wise and much more powerfull.

This is sound advice.

IF you are going to spend that much might as well look at getting a 7950GT those are some great cards.
They also have 512MB GDDR3 so its like getting a 7900GTX but for alot less.

But he said he was looking to get something to hold him over till dx 10 comes out and IMO the 7900GS is the card to beat price/perf wise.

Get the best card you can afford now.

Not as many people will be switching to DX10 cards as you might think. The reason? Windows Vista is required and will cost in the neighborhood of $300

Add that price to a new state of the art video card (Typically $500) and possibly a new PSU, and you are looking at nearly $1000 to indulge in the DX10 experience.
Waiting for prices to drop will be a popular passtime and meanwhile, you will have a decent card instead of an interim solution. Alternatively, if you have the bucks to go DX10 immediately upon release then why fret over a $100 now?

What games do you plan on using this card for, what you have now, what resolution do you play at, and how much eye candy do you like?

There is such a thing as overkill...

also what are the system specs of the computer that this card will be used in?

Well, I've never really expierenced any games full eye candy, so I would like to experience most of what games now have to offer, the system it will be with is, except for games like Diablo, Diablo 2 and LOD, Warcraft 3 and TFT, Starcraft but I mean a p2 can practically run those games, all others have medium/low settings.

Rosewill 550W SLI ready PS(I've always liked Rosewill, and my friends also use Rosewill, never failed me, may be the best choice to you guys though :0)
Asus P5NSLI 570 mobo(obviously SLI ready)

Those are the two items I already have, recieved them for the 18th birthday.

I'll be adding
2GB OCZ DDR 667
1.86GHZ Conroe and OC'ing to 2.2-2.4GHZ
Using an extra 160GB 7200RPM ide HD I've never used but I want everything new on this computer
And course either a 7600GT or 7900GT or other suggested card.
It's all going to be air cooled.

I have an old Gateway FPD1530 LCD, it's only capable of 1024x768, I would LOVE to play F.E.A.R at highest settings, CS:S at highest settings, when they come I would atleast like to have the games to look beautiful but perhaps not with all eye candy turned on, those would be UT2007, Crysis, Project offset, although I don't think it's going to be a big increase, I want to get into playing Eve-online and to my knowledge it's getting a big graphics over haul so being able to play that game when it's graphics are redone would be nice.

As I stated before, if your looking at a 7600gt and possibly a 7900gt you really cant go wrong with a 7900gs, most will clock higher than the 7900gt and cost about the same a s a 7600gt. Its the first card out that has actually made sli realistic before buying one card as 2 7900GS will outperform any 1 card that cost the same as 2 GS from the get go. Any time that happens you know you found a good deal.

There's a nice MIR on a BFG 7600GT at newegg for another few days bringing it to $115...even at normal prices a 7600GT vs 7900GS is over $50 price difference. The 7900gs is definitely a sweet card for the price though. I hope we see the x1950Pro soon to compare, it's supposed to come out at a similar price and replace the short-lived x1900GT.

I'm kind of in the same bind myself atm, but for a different reason maybe I'll make a new thread for that :p

Get the 7900GS. My brother just got one and it can be volt modded like the 7900GT to get to 670/1600. It took a whole 2 mins to do the voltmodding because we had to look up which pins were +.1 and +.2 . All you need is a $6 conductive pen from radioshack (and a multimeter if you want to make sure you did a good job).

Here is the guide, check it out.
