View Full Version : Remove annoying SP2 warnings

Hi all,

I've put off installing SP2 for a long time on my computer, because of the security centre and the way that it likes to keep alerting me about turning off the built-in firewall even after I tell it not to warn me about it in future (it conflicts with my hardware firewall).

However, I finally decided to upgrade to it after some problems, and despite the security centre issue (does anyone know how to remove the security center?), it's been fairly ok, except...

Whenever I try to download or run a file from the net, or run a downloaded file, I get these various messages:

One (http://www.arbital24.com/Pics/AnnoyingSP2/Annoying1.jpg)
Two (http://www.arbital24.com/Pics/AnnoyingSP2/Annoying2.jpg)
Three (http://www.arbital24.com/Pics/AnnoyingSP2/Annoying3.jpg)

Any idea how to turn off the alerting for these things, just as it was pre-SP2? I've looked in the Internet Options and can't seem to find anything.

Thanks!
Arby.

I just did a fresh install and I forgot how I got rid of those messages... I have a couple of programs that will do it though. Haveta find them again. Sigh...

to turn off the alerts.. goto the security center, and on the left side is a link that says 'change the way security center alerts me' thats it

Smokie - I did that, I removed the alerting for Windows updates, Firewall, and Antivirus as well as ticking the "I will monitor this solution myself" box for each one, but they still come back after restarting *sigh*.

What I really need though is a way to get rid of these annoying download messages, they are the biggest pain right now (I rarely restart, so the security center thing isn't too much of a problem).

I'm not sure, but I don't think these messages can be removed. Even if you disable Microsoft security center, they don't disappear. If it's a big deal, switch to Mozilla Firefox, which you should have already :)

Sorry, I don't have an answer for ya. I've been using Firefox, and haven't seen that screen for a while!

Hmm.. But there is also the third warning box, which appears when exes are run on the system, so I assume that isn't part of IE (see the last pic that I posted). Can that one be got rid of? Surely someone has developed a reg fix or a little tweaker program to get rid of these things?

Open the Group Policy Editor (Start | Run | Type gpedit.msc, and click OK), and expand the following branch...

User Configuration | Administrative Templates | Windows Components | Attachment Manager

Then set "Inclusion list for low file types" to Enabled, and enter the file types you don't want to be warned about in the box (for example: .exe). To prevent Windows from storing Zone Info on any downloaded files, enable "Do not preserve zone information in file attachments" (under the same branch as above).

To disable the security center:

Start | Run | Type services.msc, and click OK

Find and DClick on Security Center

Change the Startup Type to Disabled, and click apply

Reboot and you will have no more security center

redduc900 - Wouldn't it be easier to just enable "Default risk level for file attatchments", and set it to low? But thanks for the headsup on the location.
Thanks for that also turd!

Thanks! I did these steps, and they get rid of the error messages shown in Pics 2 and 3. However, when I clock on a link to an exe, the box in Pic 1 still remains. Any idea how to get rid of it? :)

go into control panel / services and disable the security center from even starting.

It already is, turned off and disabled. This message (the first one that I posted) appears even though there is no security center.

the first one is the normal download prompt, it just looks different with the new SP... Whenever you click a file to download it will ask you if you want to save it to disk or open from its location. Its done that since WIN98 I think they just changed the appearence of the window.

Check in the registry under the following key...

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE | SOFTWARE | Microsoft | Windows | CurrentVersion | Internet Settings | Zones | 3

Change the following two DWORD Values to 1000 (Hexadecimal), then reboot...

MinLevel and RecommendedLevel ...the default Value data for both is 11000 in Hex, and 69632 in Decimal. In addition, check you setting here... open IE | Tools | Internet Options | 'Security' tab | Local Intranet | 'Sites' button, then uncheck the first and third boxes.

Another little question (I have another thread up regarding removing all the SP2 "security messages" but it doesn't look like I'm going to have any luck, so it looks like I'll be installing SP2 again. *sigh*):

The "Information bar" or whatever it's called; the little yellow bar that appears at the top of an IE window when it detects that you're trying to download something (usually if a browser tries to install a plugin or feature, or run a script on the page. If you view a web-page offline with JS on it, the information bar will appear every time).

Is there a way to completely get rid of that information bar? It's very annoying :/.

Regarding the download warning... Open IE | Internet Properties | "Security" tab | Internet zone--> "Custom level" button | Downloads--> Enable "Automatic prompting for file downloads". Regarding the script warning... "Internet" zone--> Custom level" button | Scripting--> Enable "Allow websites to prompt for information using scripted windows".

Hey all,

Sorry for the old post bump, but I'm setting up a computer running XP and SP3, and when I went into gpedit it seems that it's been changed under SP3 - and doesn't contain these options anymore. I tried copying my old gpedit file from my main PC to this one but no luck, I also tried a Google search but with no luck.

Any ideas how I can access this setting now on SP3?

I'm not running XP SP3 at the moment, so I can't verify the missing "Inclusion list for low file types" or "Do not preserve zone information in file attachments" Group Policy settings. I can't see as why MS would have removed them in SP3, as both settings are still in the same location in Vista...

I don't know why they would have reduced it either,. but if you Google there's a fair amount of people complaining about it.. Included is a screenshot from this (SP3) machine anyway.

I assume you've already tried this?... expand the following branch in the registry:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies

Create a sub-key called Associations w/ a String value named LowRiskFileTypes, and .exe for data. Or just copy / paste this into Notepad, save-as a *.reg file, and run...

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies\Associations]
"LowRiskFileTypes"=".exe"
