View Full Version : Need help w/ modem
I just bought an AOpen modem.
It was working fine for about a week
then recently my computer said it did not detect a modem
i tried uninstalling the drivers and installing them again but no luck
I tried different phone jacks and cords and still nothing
I use Earthlink and all it says is that it is dialing and just sits there
can I get some help?
thanks
2 THINGS COME TO MIND
Uninstall the modem and drivers and shut down. Then remove the modem and restart without it in the system. Then shut down and do the install over.
Another thing to check is the PCI slot it is in, maybe move it.
Course, this is assuming it is an internal PCI modem.
What mainboard is it?
My nickel's worth.
It is a PCI modem
I tried what you said but it still is not working
I just returned it today and got a new one (same brand)
and is still not working
I' m using the modem in a Shuttle AK11 mainboard

Go to the device manager and look at the modem - see what IRQ it's using, then see if anything else is using that IRQ. Restart the computer, go into CMOS and disable what ports you aren't using (COM or LPT) to free up IRQs, then go to the ESCD menu (or the plug and play setup menu) and set the IRQ the modem is using to RESERVED. Reboot. When OS loads, go into the device manager and then see what IRQ the modem is using, as well as the other devices that once shared IRQs with the modem. They'll probably both be different. Now remove the modem from the device manager, restart and allow the drivers to reinstall one last time. Try using it now. Maybe an IRQ conflict was messing it up. If this didn't do it, try the above method of switching PCI slots one last time now that the IRQ has been reserved. I dunno, this worked for my SB audigy so maybe it'll work for you. It's definitely not the modem or your mobo, so it's software related. Maybe downoading the newest drivers would work? I dunno about that one either, but it's worth a shot. Good luck bro!

yea i had thought it was an irq confict also. But speaking of irq conflicts is it normal to have 4 or 5 devices on irq 11? i think my sound video and modem are all on it (working perfectly but I and a few other friends all have a bunch of devices on irq 11)
I checked all the IRQs and there is only one other device using the same number (05). When I try to changr the IRQ number the sys wont let me:mad:
ne1 else got ideas?
as far as using the same no. for different devices I know I have as many as 3 devices using the same IRQ no. and they are all working fine:eek:

IRQ sharing is fine as long as no 2 high-bandwidth devices are sharing the IRQs. Say a sound card and hard disk controller share an IRQ - you might hear pops and squeals if the disk is accessed while a wave sound is playing (mine did this). If it's something like a LPT and a USB and PS2 mouse then it won't be a problem. By reserving an IRQ in CMOS you force the plug-n-play OS to mix up it's IRQ assignments thereby moving two problem devices away from each other, hopefully. It's a quick and dirty fix but it should work without problems, especially if you disable non-essential devices like COMs and LPTs and what not to give the plug and play software more IRQs to play with.
What IRQ is your modem on now? What else is on that IRQ and what are your total symptoms? I'm puzzled and interested.

I got a AOpen soundcard SW724, and it shares IRQ 11 with my Modem, and Radeon all are PCI. What OS are you using? I had some problems with my modem, and Win2K, I also use EarthLink.

The vid card could be conflicting there.
I am uisng WinMe
Last night I disabled LPT1 but then enabled it again because that did not solve the problem
Right now when I checked the IRQs it said LPT1 was on 5 and the modem was on 7
It also said the ACPI IRQ for PCI IRQ Steering was on 7
I' ll have to wait till my friend gets home tonight so I can use his password to sign on
I' ll post later 2nite with the results:eek:
Oh yeah:eek: my vid card is on IRQ 11
*EDIT* The vid card is AGP-GeForce MX200 32M
You guys think maybe I should try to change my modem IRQ to #11 like my vid card is on because you guys said your vid card and modem were on the same IRQ:confused:

Well that could be an idea, im not entirely sure if it would work or not but hey. You cant hurt it more can you :)

I don't think that matters from computer to computer because our system configs are different and the modem doesn't always use a certain IRQ like some things do. Like he said, it couldn't hurt you more though.
Well I changed the IRQ to 11 and still nothing!
I also disabled the on-chip modem-does that matter or should I enable it again:confused: It still didn' t work after that.

Keep the on-chip modem disabled for now. Does your motherboard have an AMR, CNR or ACR slot? The IRQ thing was a guess on my part. Have you tried the modem in another computer or did you already tell me this?
There is a CNR slot on the mobo but no AMR or ACR slot.
I will try it in another comp 2nite.

it looks like this problem isnt going to be solved anytime soon.. As a last resort have you thought about reinstalling windows, or reformat your drive and then reinstall windows. Another idea i might try first, try moving the modems location. ie put it in adifferent pci slot (agian i dont know how that would help but hey couldt hurt could it?)
Well I tried it in another computer-it didn' t work but was making a fax diaing noise insted of a phone noise like when my old modem dials up:eek:
Is there a way to fix this?

did u add any hardarwe or anything ever since u had ur modem? Something u installed could be interfering.
Nope didn' t add anything since the modem.

well if ur machine is calling out, wouldn't it mean that ur computer recognizes ur modem? Maybe see http://www.aopen.com/products/modem/ , there might be new drivers. Also right click on My Computer and chech the properties to make sure the drivers are installed correctly.
Well now I returned the AOpen modem and got a HI-VEC or something like that and it seemed like it was working fine but when it wa dialing it stopped and said there was a awindows protection error. You need to restart your computer.
Is there a way to fix this?
I don' t know what to do now.

Go into CMOS setup and try disabling both of your serial ports. COM1-4 should all be disabled in CMOS. Now boot up and give it another shot. Modems tend to prefer COM2, including internal ones. I have no idea why this is, but in my experience it's true. If your modem is dialing, even erroneously, it is a good sign. Hanging up is not....but it sounds like a COM port problem cuz I've seen this before and that's what it was.
thanks!
I' ll try that maybe 2nite
I hope this modem doesn' t give me problems like the AOpen modem
By the way the modem is a HI-VAL

Yeah, let me know what happens. If you ever are looking for an analog audio modem again, try US Robotics. USR has been hailed as one of the best modem manufacturers for quite a while. Not that it really matters. Modems are generic almost always, regardless of who makes them. Good luck!

Or try Zoom . I have had good experience with these. These cost around $60

I/m talking about the Model 3025 zoom/Modem pci v.92. At the top it says "56K V.92 PCI Faxmodem for Windows 95, 98, ME, NT 4.0, AND 2000" (It comes in a yellow box) Both of the computers at my house that are using this modem are running Win Me.

just a quick note - when my modem dials it doesn't actaully make a noise but it IS dialing.
Are you sure it isn't actually dialing (listen to a phone while u dial)

yea, its possible that u might have the modem sounds turned off. Go into the control panel and check the modem properties to make sure.

Also some modems will or are set to not dial unless they detect a dialtone and no other active extensions on the line so picking up the phone while it's trying it dial might make it not dial......know what I mean vern?
I wish I would' ve known that before!
How much do they cost?
Well I think that my modem is working now all I have to do is change the time before it hangs up before it can connect!
It only started working when I booted up my computer and it installed a modem enumerator
The only hardware I added was 2 USB ports that use pin connectors on the mobo:D

I can hear my new modem dialing because it sends the sounds through the speakers

no, sorry
the modem isn' t working
I thought it was going to work but then a BSOD came up and it said Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer and I couldn' t even use the ol' 3 finger salute!
How can I fix this problem? I' m pretty sure its not the modem.

I think IRQ conflict or some other type of resource conflict. Try going into CMOS and setting different IRQs to "reserved" and booting. This will allow you to hopefully find out which one is the culprit and maybe reconfigure the other piece of hardware that's using it to a different setting. I hope.
It's definitely something on the MB or another piece of hardware though. Try booting with just hard disk 0 (C) and your vid card in (and the modem too of course) and see what happens. Then if it works keep putting your other cards i.e. sound and whatever else back in...this'll isolate the problem if it's caused by an expansion card.

Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words - "mank" and "ind". What do these words mean ? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

"I hate it when people say somebody has a "speech impediment", even if he does, because it could hurt his feelings. So instead, I call it a "speech improvement", and I go up to the guy and say, "Hey, Bob, I like your speech improvement." I think this makes him feel better."

Then everybody would get real quiet and ashamed, because they had made fun of the soldering iron of justice, and I could probably hit them up for a free drink. "
"A funny thing to do is, if you're out hiking and your friend gets bitten by a poisonous snake, tell him you're going to go for help, then go about ten feet and pretend that *you* got bit by a snake.
