Thanks for the find; picked up a 146 just now (even with TIM and shipping, cheaper than the Egg).

Estimated arrival on the 165 is 9/29/2006 according to the site. I'm thinking of picking up a 165 and maybe another 144 to make a cheap server out of.

Newegg has the 144 in retail box for $79 shipped...just FYI.

I just bought one for my spare confuser. I plan on loading Vista and hoping for the best.

Wonder if it'll be as fast as my OCed Northy (2.4C @ 3.0)

how does these compare to the amd 64 3700+ ?

The 148 and the 3700 are very similar in performance, both have 1MB of cache and operate at 2.2GHz (11 x 200).

A while back one of the members here did a comparison and his benchmarks where identical, for all intents and purposes, between a 3700 and an Opteron 148.

Edit - added link to thread with comparison

http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=439632

The general thinking is that the Opteron is a better cpu because it has been tested to perform in "Mission Critical" server conditions but whether or not that is true, I can't say.

The Opterons used to be viewed as having more overclocking headroom, again, because they were deemed to have been superior chips, however, recently the newer 3700s have been producing very good results...many clocking near 3.0GHz, and beyond, with minimal voltage increases.

In my opinion, either CPU, for right around $100 ($97, shipped, for the 3700) is a great "bang for your bucks" purchase, surpassed perhaps only by the dual core X2 3800, which sells for $160 or so.

You can't go wrong with either, as they are the same core. The Opterons are supposed to be better silicon, but as other mentioned the 3700 has been hitting 3.0GHZ on air quite easy. Go with which ever is cheaper at this point.
