Hi, i have recently built my first WC setup. I could find answers for most of my questions from searching this forum. but now i have a new question. My rad becomes so warm when i am just leaktesting it, with no cpu connected to my waterblock. but when i turned off the pump and let the water sits there, the rad would then be cool. So, Is the heat from the spinning of the pump(running full speed)? Is this normal that the rad get so warm while leaktesting?

P.S. I am using distilled water only since i have only copper/plastic combination.

heres my parts:
Apogee waterblock
MCP655 pump
BIP II

yes, with no fans running the water will heat up just from the pump heat

yep, part of the heat dissipated by the fans is the heat from the pump

Especially if the fans aren't running, radiators aren't the best passive coolers.

Fire that baby up and post some pics.

Well if it is getting warm it is doing its job. I is susposed to absorbe heat from the water... then fans disapate the heat from the rad to the air... My D5 dumps a good bit of heat into my system... I have the same thing happen while leak testing for an hour+ with no fans.

When leaktesting, correct, it's doing it's job.

However, I don't believe that it's supposed to get warm with fans on it.

That would depend on how much heat you are dumping into the water it is cooling and how much heat it can dissipate into the air, the rad in your car gets hot while operating properly...

Rads will warm up. In theory they will always be warmer then the air around them (as long as there is something generating heat that is running through it) And yes a pump will do that. With no air on it, there is less heat dissipation (yes that means it gets warmer) And remember a rad will NEVER BE COLD! It can only be at ambient ***Unless the ambient is cold, so if you live in the arctic ice cold rad

The objective becomes how close to the ambient temp can we get the rad by moving air through it...

This feels like dejavu....I've seen a thread VERY similar to this, and someone said something nearly exactly the same as what Seven said, yet this thread is 1 day olld.....this is kinda freaky.

I noticed this too when I first leaktested but I just figured it was normal. When I finally powered up it cooled down pretty fast. My pump gets pretty hot, its a via aqua 1800. Do all the other WC pumps get pretty hot too?

Depends on the pump but they all make heat. Unless its burning your hand you're fine. The Via Aqua 1800 only uses about 20W of power and most of that is turned into mechanical energy with a portion of it becoming heat.

So how much heat does a D5 pump out?

18W I think.
