I have a 30GB Western Digital that hasn't given me a second's grief... my 20GB maxtor has not been quite so nice and i haven't owned a seagate in years...

If you can swing a IBM 60GXP I'd recommend that (NOT the 75GPX!!!).

Have a 13.6 WD and it works like a charm...a bit slow by today's standards, but it keeps on chooglin'...Had a Quantum Bigfoot 6.4 prior to this and it crapped out and took everything with...Go with the WD...they seem pretty good...my 2 centavos...:D

Yummy....... Um I mean I didn't recall seeing IBM given as a choice. Ive had good luck with my 30gb Maxtor.

Drool....................) What was the question? Only had two Western Digital Hard Drives. My 10 gig has survived since 98. I upgraded to a 30 gig. 7200, and has been trouble free.

Presently in my home network I have four WD 20g, two WD 30g, two WD 13.6g, one Maxtor 20g, two old Maxtor 2g, one real old Seagate 400something MB.

I've been very happy with the Western Digitals to this point.

Seagate SCSI - "teh win!1!"
Seagate IDE - Iffy, I've lost a single Seagate IDE (Only owned one and two Seagate "Black Bart" drives)

Maxtor IDE - Eww... three dead Maxtors in my lifetime.
Conner IDE - Two dead from them, a Conner was absorbed into Maxtor, so that kind of makes it, five dead Maxtor drives.

Western Digital - Never had one die on me, actually threw about two less than 5GB WD drives, just because they were not worth the use of an IDE channel at such a small size.

Fujitsu IDE - I've used them in RAID boxs before and only had one problem, one of them would overheat and die, that was 20GB Fujitsu.

IBM - Never used their IDE drives, heard the Desk"jet" series is quite loud.

My vote - Western Digital

Yea, I'd say go for the Western Digital. I've used three and all three are still workin... even the 520MB that's about 7 years old. Have a 13.6 that still works... bout 3 years old... and just got a new 40... like it so far.

Shoot the hostage!

I mean...Well, I've had a...hm..something I bought quite a while ago die on my rather recently. I think it was a Maxtor. The IBMs and WDs that I've had haven't died yet, so that's something. :)

I think I have a second Maxtor that's just a couple of months newer than the one that died (I wasn't really paying tons of attention to my hdds when I got those some three-odd years ago).

got a wd 20gb in one machine, and a 30gb quantum fireball plus as in the other. afaik, quantum and maxtor are now one and the same, and the 7200rpm maxtor is basically the same as my quantum drive. both of the drives have been really good, and the fireball is FAST! if i had to choose, i'd say maxtor.

Somewhere on this forum it said that Maxtors where the best and beat ythe IBM's (just) in all speed and relaibility tests...
Then again Seagate are good, I had prob's wif me first 20gig but this ones ok even though I've formaTTED IT 50 TIMES!!! aND MY OLD 1GIG seagate has lasted 50 formats + and 10 years still going strong!!!
Lets hope my new maxtor 60gig is ok to!!!
Its often luck my mates seagate blew straight away so there you go, take ya money take ya choice...

My "vote" is the Seagate. I have had the best luck with them.
At work and at home I see Maxtors fail every few days, they are total junk. I do see some failed WDs, but not nearly as many as Maxtor

This has been discussed many times before and we always come to the conclusion that none of them are as reliable as we would like.

RedneckTeck, I thought Seagate bought Connor, Maxtor bought Quantum.
