Please help guys... I have a MSI P965 Neo Motherboard and had a Pentium D 820 2.8GHz @ 3.4GHz oc. installed. It ran great with this setup so I wanted more... I purchased an OEM core 2 duo E6600 and installed it... my machine runs like garbage now! Before my 3Dmark05 score was 9276 with a XFX 7950 GX2 and 1 gig PC24200 533MHz ram. Now it scores 9382 stock but when I try to oc. it actually loses performance! (scores 8865!) plus in stock config. it crashes when I try to run 3dmark06 test 2 firefly forest. PLUS my oc'd 820's temp idle was around 59C. Now thos thing idle is like 71C!!! I thought they were supposed to run cooler? I applied thermal paste when installing it and did everything the same as the last CPU i installed ( the 820). The MAX i can oc. is about 2.75GHz but when I do this and load CPU Z it shows very confusing stats... like a multiplier at x6 and overall @ 1.87GHz... I'm so ****ed! I spent $500.00 on trash it seems... Whta am I doing wrong? Is it the Motherboard? It says it's conroe ready! PLEASE HELP!!!

Welcome to the forums :)

It appears to me that perhaps due to the CPU overheating it is throttling (automatically reducing its speed to try and avoid getting dangerously hot). Hence your frequency appears wrong and your 3dmark scores decrease.

What cooling have you got?

Hi KingK76 -

Welcome to the forums.

I agree with David that you most likely are thermal throttling due to overheating.

If you already haven't done so, I suggest you reseat the HSF ass'y using new Thermal Paste, paying attention, when you remove the HSF, to see if there's any irregularities on either the surface of the HSF or the CPU.
