I don't think I've had this much peer pressure since #gasp# high school. I'm this close to clicking the "send order" button.

I succumbed last night......cheaper upgrade path than a whole new build though :)

I just went in whole hog. Every computer I own used to be AGP but a bunch of new parts are on the way as is the X1950 XTX. It will be very interesting to see which of the X19xx series proves to have the most ban for the buck. It is unlikely to be the one I bought. But hey, I'm only buying one so I might as well get the fastest. I hope I'm only buying one.

First off why did you post a picture of my sister-in-law.
ATIs new slogan: Bet you can't fold just one! :)
More like: Kill aliens, save lives. ATI, the fastest way to Fold.
Huh?

Y'no... you can use ATI GPUs for folding now... (X1900 and above, X1600 and above and crossfire will be supported later)
Stop waiting, its available for download as of right now.
quick somebody post some screen shots!

I have bad news... it wont run on the 1950 cards... look at this:
* Catalyst driver version 6.5 [download from ATI or from a Stanford mirror ] or version 6.10 [download from ATI ], but not any other versions: 6.6 and 6.7 will work, but at a major performance hit; 6.8 and 6.9 will not work at all. Due to all the complexities of support, we will support only versions 6.5 and 6.10.
* DirectX: 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904) or later, [download here] , which yields d3dx9_30.dll (the critical part for FAH)
The 1950's have to use 6.9 AFAIK... i just get errors up the wazoo.
a bunch of immediate EUE's for me ... i ran the 6.10 driver.
Seems I am not alone.

"summit"ed @ 4:30pm est after throughfullly read through the whole FAQ. 2 1900XT 256mb should be here by wed.!! :D
hmmm...... bunch of EUE already Pete?? what client?
looks like i had an install problem with the 6.10 beta ... removed it all, checked disks ... maybe leftover from me playing with ATITool and leaning how to use it...
anyway ,,, reinstalled the 6.10 beta drivers and it is folding now. Just started a wu so we will see how it goes.
uninstalled atitools and didn't put it back on after reinstal of the 6.10 driver.
running a single folding instance on a 6600 ... seems to be consuming 50% cpu so i guess it is going ok ...
/edit the 6.10 driver indeed has a problem ... so i switched to 6.5 and it has completed a WU.

which client are you running Pete? I assume it's the commandline since you most likely won't care about the pretty picture?
so, w/out installing the atitool solve your problem huh? (taking note)
Yeah, the 6.10s are only in beta though.
Anybody have an updated report before I make a decision on if I want to build a new rig right now?

Pete seems to be the only one able to get it to work ATM.
Now, I behind a bit on all of this, can you Fold a cpu & a gpu?
Just got the word from our technical guru -
Vijay now says 6.10 driver breaks FAH, and advises 1950XTX owners to use 6.5, but no sure thing.
My 1950XTX that was on order, has been cancelled, and I'm looking for a 1900XTX, instead. They may fix the driver problem, but saving a couple hundred bucks is sounding better all the time.

"Beta testing has already turned up an important problem with the Catalyst 6.10 drivers (thanks to everyone for their help here); 6.10 is causing EUE's (possibly amongst other causes too) and ATI is looking into this.
For now, we recommend 6.5 *only* (not 6.10, until it can be fixed). This is very much a beta test, so we expect to find problems like this. But we are working to quickly fix them as we find them."

I am currently folding with the 6.6 Catalyst Drivers. It's working, but I don't know how big of a performance hit it'll take. I'm going to wait until they get the 6.10 drivers up and running before I update my drivers. I have always hated downgrading my vid drivers. Here's the output I have so far.

now that's the REAL question that's in everyone's mind!!! as far as it seems right now, you'll have to shut down one CPU client in order to fold the GPU client..... (yeah, that sux!! ) and what's the point of using ALLthe power w/in a computer huh?? e.g. dual core + gpu (should) = 2 cpu clients + gpu client, but that's NOT the case right now!! dual core + gpu (only) = 1 cpu client + 1 gpu client??? we are giving up used cpu power in order to fold on the unused gpu power?? huh?? what's the point?? (regardless the point system, which imho, doesn't encouraging you to spend the $200+ to fold on gpu neither)
some people find a work around way to limit the CPU client's usage to 95% or less and it seems to work tho... but just not sure how much performance penality tho... it seems some guy did that and ran from 5mins/frame (GPU client) to 20mins/frame... now I know the CPU still needs to feed the GPU w/ some info and such, but 75% performance penality? what's the point of using the unuse GPU power to fold then???.... shouldn't the GPU client is using the GPU power to fold? if so, then why slow down that much?! it should be just the CPU client slow down a little bit to feed/transfer the info to the GPU. but looking at that, GPU folding doesn't sound good to me at all ATM.....
updated my previous post ... 6.10 driver eue'd repeatedly at 19% on same wu (4 times overnight  ).
installed 6.5 drivers and now working ... completed 1 wu on it.
Posted some power info on silver's GPU thread -> http://www.ocforums.com/showpost.php?p=4724263&postcount=25

Wow that does suck, I hope they can resolve that soon. I would consider buying a x1900 with the prices coming down as they have, but not if I have to surrender one of my cpu cores to fold the gpu. I don't game all that much so aside from folding the x1900 holds little value to me right now.

If the GPU client gave more performance than a CPU, I could see all the hoopla.
but since it doesn't, and you have to use a cpu to run the gpu,
Whats the point?
I understand that this is something new, and can become better with time.
I just can't see being a "Pioneer" here right now. Not when we have to foot the bill for a new vid card. $$$$$$$$
