View Full Version : My Athlon is so much faster...

So much faster than my Durons. I have one Athlon (my main system) and two Durons (folding only).

Even while I use my Athlon, surfing, whatever, it still kicks Duron butt. I am always surprised when I see that it has done another wu, even with my heavy use, and just waiting for those Durons to finish one when that is all they do...

Of course, my athlon is 1.0Ghz@1130, with lots of memory.
My durons are 750@1.0Ghz and 750@825, not enough memory...I think that the memory helps.

It's not near as much faster than your Durons are compared to P3s. How soon we forget the less fortunate. :)

yes, thanks for reminding me:burn:

Do AMD CPUs fold faster than Intel ones? I just don't know, never had an expirience w/ Intel after my P-166MMX...

Much, much faster

celerons and P3s over 1ghz do pretty well. ol' mans celeron at 1.7ghz has to do pretty damn good.

I think we new this from awhile back.

but then again someone put a p4 2.0 ghz up on pricewatch for $46. haha. i think he is devaluing the ghz. i'm sure its an error.

flounder43 how long does it take the duron @ 1.0G to fold say a Villan with 100 long frames?

I haven't acutally timed it...I just started one a little bit ago, I will keep track of this one.

My guess is about 1 day?

Thanks man how fast is that Athlon @ 1.13 anyway 2 , 3 times faster?

In terms of wu's it seems to do them 2-3 times faster. It is hard to tell, because I haven't kept track with numbers. I am going to try to do that, just because I am now curious...

Out of curiosity, I have been keeping track of mine. If you use Foldmonitor 5, it will tell you average time per frame, when you started the unit and projected finishing time. It's not perfect but gives an excellent idea. I have two folders going, one that I have experimented with and one I just set up for my wife (not overclocked). Comparison based on 100 frame Villin, most common that I see;

Tbird 1.33 @ 1.5 (10X150) avg 7h 12m
Tbird 1.33 @ 1.575 (10.5X150) avg 6h 48m
Tbird 1.33 @ 1.6 (11X146) avg 6h 42m
Tbird 1.33 @ 1.6 (10.5X153) avg 6h 36m

Tbird 1.0 @ 1.0 (7.5X133) Avg 10h 30m

These are average and if the machines are left alone for the entire wu may make a 5 minute difference. 1606 is the max for my cpu, 155 is the max for my fsb. 10.5X153 give me the best overall performance.

Shawn

Ps both of these machines are based on Epox 8k7a with 512Mb of crucial pc2100 ram.

I know I don't have money to throw away like that. :)

My Athlon 1.4@1.4 takes 7hrs 42min per villen (256 SDram). The p4 1.7@2.13 takes 11hrs 39mins ( 512 RDram).

I agree. That would be a waste. Maybe if they paid me $46, and threw in a mobo and memory, ....

I'm not sure that more memory does help. I have 512 meg in both 1.4's and very seldom is it all used (per Norton utilities). When they are just folding, it's less than half used. Of course, that's running win98 and win98 screws up if you put in more than 512. There are some possible fixes for that on the m$ website, but why bother? 512 is enough, for now. :burn:

flounder43 do you have any figures on the folding speeds for your Athlon and Duron systems?

Yeah, I have been kinda distracted because I just got my router/network up and running.

foldmonitor says that my athlon averages 5.86 minutes per frame, on a 100 frame protein. So lets see that makes 586 minutes, which is 9.77 hours. Keep in mind this is also on the computer that I use daily for various things. I set up fold monitor on the Durons just now as well...

In summary,

Athlon @1.13Mhz: average 9.77 hours
Duron @1.0 Ghz: average 10.9 hours
Duron @825 Mhz: average 12.77 hours

So, I guess I was wrong, my Athlon is not really that much faster, at least as long as I tax the resources of my Athlon with my usual daily use.

Cool thanks for the reply. I guess I will build a Duron folder after all :) .

Are you running the Duron @ 1.0G on a ECS SIS735 mobo? DDR memory? If the Duron and Athlon both use DDR do they both have the same amount of memory?

My Athlon @ 1.13Ghz has 384Mb DDR on an Epox 8kha.
My Duron @ 1.0Ghz has 128Mb of SDRAM on the ECS 87KHA.(I like this mobo)
My Duron @ 825Mhz has 64Mb of SDRAM on a MSI K7T Pro.
