Hello,

Just installed XP64 on system as my lone OS snce I needed to format. I have all updates but I am unable to locate driver for an unknown device appearing in device manager. I also for some reason am not seeing my Benq 1640 DVD drive. I last updated the XP64 inf chipset file from Intel and it appeared to correct SM Bus driver that had exclamation mark beside it in hardware manager.

However I can not solve issue as to why I can not see my dvd rom drive.
I am using a GB DS3 965P board. All other drivers are installed along with all recent updates and everything seems fine except for the annoying hardware install box that appears searching for a driver for this unknown device. I realized my dvd drive was not being detected when I inserted the GB cd into it to see if there are XP64 drivers on it. I checked in bios as well and all seems correct to how it is set

Thoughts? As this OS is newer to me and I am not bothering with Vista for now.....

I'm thinkin your "unknown device" in Device Manager IS your Benq 1640 DVD drive. My suggestion is to (first set a system restore point in case I'm wrong) right click on your unknown device while in device manager, go to Properties, click on "Update Driver", and don't use Windows Update. Instead, "install from a list or specific location", then click "Don't search-I will select the driver to install". It's pretty much point and click from there.
