I have an Epox 8KHA mobo with an Athlon 1.0Ghz@1.130. My HSF is a Volcano 5. Thus far it has been fantastic. But, all of a sudden, it does not seem to be doing as well as it did before. I have Arctic Silver II under it.
Could it be that I need to take the HSF off, clean, and re-apply? I just read an article, I am not sure where, that criticized AS and other such thermal stuff in favor of a non-silicon based paste...
Don't suggest another HSF, because I am well aware of the alternatives, but just want to figure out why mine went up 5 degrees over the last week...
Ya I reaply AS2 periodicaly it always seems to help some what ecpecially if you've shifted the hs any while inside your case. Its a pain for me to remove the hsf couse its all copper (sk6) and the cpu core marks up the copper very quickly so I have to relap the hs every single time I remove it to reaply as2 or whatever.
And yes you could use a HS upgrade...

also make sure all your fans in the case are working, one may have given up

Well I took the HSF off and cleaned it up with some nail polish remover...Man is that ACII messy!!! It stains everything.
So I reapplied and now am down 4 degrees...I have got to find a new thermal paste, I read a review recently about some stuff in a jar, non silicon based, that is less messy and lasts longer.

I know what you mean this is why I've put off applying AS2 and AS thermal adhesive to my north bridge and v/c hs and ram sinks.

AS2 shouldn't have problems over time unless you use too much of it, remember on a lapped HS you only want a translucent film of it, not a huge blob. If there's only that much of it there isn't enough to get it everywhere :P

artic silver is a waste of money to me, only brought temps down 1C and is so much messier than the radio shack stuff...
